AirAsia defies slump, keeps expanding Writer: BOONSONG KOSITCHOTETHANA Published: 6/07/2009 at 12:00 AM Newspaper section: Business While other airlines have either maintained or downsized flights in their industry's severe downturn, Thai AirAsia continues to move ahead with its network expansion.
School children join a Thai AirAsia crew to welcome the recent delivery of the carriers ninth Airbus A320. The no-frills carrier is on course to take delivery of three additional new A320 jetliners from Airbus, enabling it to add six international destinations in Taiwan, China and India between September and early next year.
The airline, owned 49% by the Malaysia-based AirAsia group, is set to start flying from Bangkok to Taipei in September, before adding services to Mumbai and New Delhi around December. Kunming, Chengdu and Guangzhou are due to join the network around the same time, if not earlier.
The six-year-old airline will set launch times as soon as it obtains necessary licences from destination countries and gets confirmation of aircraft delivery dates from the European planemaker, said chief executive Tassapon Bijleveld.
Airbus plans to deliver the three twin-engine narrow-body planes, each with 180 seats, to Thai AirAsia in September, October and December. They will join the airline's current fleet of 16 jets - nine A320s and seven Boeing 737-300s.
Two more new A320s are due to join the fleet next year as some B737-300s are gradually phased out in a modernisation plan that calls for the order of 40 new A320s.
The new aircraft will expand a growing international network as the carrier has almost fully covered domestic routes, on which it has almost 40% of the market.
The planes will also be used for a second daily flight on the Bangkok-Hong Kong route it introduced early this year.
The only other international route Thai AirAsia introduced this year was Bangkok-Bali. Its current network covers 10 domestic cities and 13 international destinations within a maximum flying time of four hours.
All the planned new routes will be operated on a daily basis, in line with Thai AirAsia's business concept, which underlines frequency.
Expanding to India poses the most challenges as Thai AirAsia has never operated there before, said Mr Tassapon.
The airline will be the first low-cost carrier to fly between Thailand and India, opening a new segment in competition with full-service airlines.
Thai AirAsia reported a 15% increase in passengers in the first four months of this year but saw a slowdown in May and June.
Despite the reduction in traffic demand triggered by the recession, the airline is confident it can hit its target of carrying 5.2 million passengers this year.
