Dear MoM,
SCUBA Diving First of all, I would like to start with telling you what SCUBA (Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) actually is.
I assume you believe it is a risk taking activity aimed to eliminate the lives of young ones such as me. You are wrong
It is not a risk-taking activity that would lead young ones to face the dangers of the predators of the sea and the sea itself. It is not the gateway that guarantees a no-return trip to the abyss. It is not a world filled with man-eating fish that would devour anything that crosses its path. And, it is not as dangerous as it seems. SCUBA diving is a sport for those who are passionate about the wildlife beneath the surface.
SCUBA is the only way to truly marvel at the glorious ecosystem that could not be seen from the surface of the water. It would be a magnificent experience to be able to stay submerge along with the rich fauna and flora down there. However, it is only for those with a passive love for nature. Those who lack this would find SCUBA diving of little interest, and may even go as far as calling it a waste of time and money. Nonetheless, I am certain that I have enough passion to find such an activity worthwhile. I have loved sharks and have dreamt of SCUBA diving from a young age, and now, the desire is burning all over again.
I know that you and Sa-ee believe that it is a dangerous activity, and in some cases, yes, that is true. SCUBA diving can be dangerous at times when a diver tries to go beyond his/her limits, thus leading to panic. I, however, am pretty sure that I know my limits well, and at the verge of danger, I would not linger and back off instantly. Dive instructors would also completely make sure that you know what to do at times of crisis, and that you know your own limits before granting you a dive certificate. This way, it could almost be guaranteed that a diver with a PADI license would face little or no problems when diving. Although such an astounding activity would require quite a lot of money investment, it would surely be worth the cost! Obviously, learning how to dive may be quite expensive, costing at least 10,000 baht. A lot more money would have to be spent on diving equipments if I wish to continue diving. A diving suit may cost up to 3,000, a BCD (Buoyancy Control Device) may cost up to 9,000, and along with other equipments such as a mask, snorkel, dive computer, pressure gauge, etc may reach approximately 15,000-20,000 baht. I may want an underwater digital camera, too. However, the sheer magnificence of SCUBA diving would make up for all the money used.
It would be a pleasurable experience that would allow me to experience what millions of other people out there are experiencing. SCUBA diving is also a conservative act towards nature. For the passionate, it would allow us to learn a lot more about the ocean, and hopefully if we begin to develop a love for what we see down there, we would be able to stop continuing the global crisis that is destroying the natural habitat down there.
SCUBA diving comes with one rule that would support nature conservation, look, but dont touch. Touching may damage corals or disturb the animals, so touching is not allowed.
SCUBA diving is also an activity that may be the main tourism focus of a certain area. In order to truly experience the full experience of going to that area, diving may be required. For example, a trip to the beautiful Great Barrier Reef of Australia without entering the water would be a wasted trip. I learnt this lesson on our first trip to the Phi Phi islands, as you didnt even allow us to snorkel. That trip to Phuket was a wasted trip that only made me feel that the trip wasnt enjoyed to its full potential, and that the adults should start being less overprotective of us because we are soon going to become adults.
Also, dad loved the sea as well. Obviously, he does as he frequently snorkels while we were in ...., and I bet he wouldve loved to SCUBA dive if given the opportunity. Every father would love to pass on his passion to his son. Seeing you as a loving widow, I assume you would probably gladly allow dads probable wish to come true by allowing him to pass on his passion of the ocean to his son, me. Another reason Id like to learn this passive sport is because in the future, I plan to work in the field of marine biology. SCUBA diving is one of the only ways to interact with animals living down below the oceans surface, and it is an essence to any marine biologist. Marine biology is a vast field combining oceanography, ichthyology, zoology, botany, fishery science, conservation, and ecology into one interesting field.
As a marine biologist, my job would be to survey species population, study animal behavior and anatomy, identify and classify animals, managing fisheries, tracking animal migratory behaviors, and just about anything to do with marine life. In the future, Id like a job that would enable me to do what I am interested in, not what you believe suits me best. In this case, Id like to work with animals over politics. Income would not at all be a problem as a marine biologist actually receives above-average pay, ranging from 90,000 baht to a maximum of around 140,000 baht.
Besides, I would pick a job depending on the tasks, not on the income. As with many other jobs, a marine biologist may face difficulties and maybe danger in some cases, but at the same time, as with many other jobs such as a doctor, marine biologists all over the world work for a purpose: to educate the rest of the world about the importance of wildlife. That, I believe, is the purpose that would inspire me to work best.
You may probably believe that a job in the field of marine biology may consist of work that requires the biologist to wrestle with dangerous animals, just like our famed naturalist, Steve Irwin. However, unlike Steve Irwin, who is also a TV host, there is little or no wrestling with huge crocodiles, and less dangerous missions.
All animal interactions in marine biology are basically just sample collection and observation of wildlife in their natural habitat. Marine biology is the only field that truly interests me, and I believe that it is better suited for me than politics are. None of anyone related to us has also ever ventured out of the business/politics/management field, and I wish to start something different by working in the field of marine biology. It would be a good example to future generations to care more about the environment than we do about politics or business management.
Besides, if you were to be proud of me, I would rather have you be proud of me for doing something new, rather than repeating the same feat that previous generations have achieved before. It would also be best if I take marine biology because its true that work is best done when the worker has interest in what he/she is working on. I would most likely earn more impressive grades if motivated by marine biology.
Although I am still young, I do not believe that any other fields would interest me any more than marine biology does, and it would be my goal to work as a marine biologist when I grow up. In conclusion, marine biology and SCUBA diving are my main passion, and there is little doubt that it will most likely remain that way for the rest of my life. I highly doubt that you would be able to talk me out of it, but only time will tell. I may change my goal sooner or later, but as of now, please support my academic interests by allowing me to go learn SCUBA diving next year.
I would really appreciate your support. The financial cost may be high, but I promise that I would repay you in the future if possible. I wont be buying any SCUBA gear, besides the mask, snorkel, fins, and the wetsuit until I am able to make my own money, which would be after college when I am able to earn a salary high enough to support my family and my wants.
SCUBA diving may be a risky sport at times, but not unless you take precautions and plan your dive accurately.
The best way to dive is to: plan the dive, and to dive the plan.
Anyway, I hope you will begin to acknowledge my reasoning, and I hope you would allow me to go learn SCUBA diving next year, either during Songkran or during the summer vacation.
Thank you for all your time taken and financial support. I promise to work a lot harder in my academics if I am allowed to fulfill my passions and dreams. Sincerely, Your Son June 28, 2008
