Arica is a city in the far northern part of Chile located where the Atacama Desert meets the Pacific Ocean right at the base of the Andes mountains. This unique geographical location seems to be the reason why Arica is the driest city in the world. The people of Arica see less rainfall than any other people in the world.....but that means plenty of sunny days! The dry climate has also helped preserve ancient human remains & various other mummies that can be seen in the Archeological museum. If you want to learn about the indiginous people of Arica visit the museum first. Just because Arica gets little rainfall doesn't mean they can't grow crops there. Arica is also an oasis and there is plenty fertile land where vast orchards grow. The beaches are long & not too crowded, but the water is pretty cold. You can also visit El Morro where the Chileans defeated a combined Army of Peruvian & Bolivian soldiers which helped define the modern borders between Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. If you are curious maybe you can head a few minutes up the road from Arica for a visit to Tacna, Peru just across the nearby international border. Arica is also the gateway to the Andes mountains and several beautiful national parks...but beware of the high altitudes as you approach the Bolivian border several hours east of Arica. Despite being a lonely city once famous for mining and fishing Arica still has a lot to offer.....and the people who live there call Arica Chile's forgotten city. Let's show them that not everyone has forgotten Arica.
