The information below was updated on 26 June 2012. The situation in Tibet has been changing very fast throughout the past few months, the information given below should be used as a reference only.
- Permit situation: Tibet is now opened, but only half-opened. There are several new restrictions to get the permit:
- Tours must enter from Nepal to Tibet.
- It means that all tours from mainland China to Tibet will be suspended.
- Permits can only be issued to a group with five or more than five people. (Note: NOT four people or more than four people, but FIVE!)
- So right now no permits will be issued to a group with one person, two people, three people or four people.
- All members in the same group must belong to the same nationality. No mixed nationalities, unless you have proof of relationship, e.g. marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc. Only these two relationships are possible to form a group with mixed nationalities.
- There is a very strange rule that no permits will be issued to the following nationalities: Austrian, British, Korean and Norwegian.
- A proof of money transfer of at least 50% of the tour cost from the travelers to the tour agency must be provided. It can be a bank receipt.
- Everest Base Camp is not opened yet, but we expect it to be reopened soon, check out this page for more updates soon.
- Permits for the Chamdo Area is not available.
- Permits for overland trip from Sichuan to Tibet, or Yunnan to Tibet, are not available.
- Indian nationals require special permits to visit Tibet. If you are Indian-passport holders, make sure the tour agencies fully understand the special requirements for Indian nationals.
