AirAsia Expedia in big marketing push Will spend 100 million baht to build brand

After launching its Thai operation five months ago, AirAsia Expedia Inc, the world's leading online travel company, set a marketing budget of 100 million baht to build brand awareness among local travellers.
The company sees high potential to grow the online travel business in Thailand thanks to low competition and growing internet users.
Dan Lynn, the chief executive of AirAsia Expedia, said the number of visitors to www.expedia.co.th totalled 20-30 million in February, and monthly growth has hovered at 20-30% in the past five months.
Last year, the average growth of online tickets in Asia was estimated at 15%, Scandinavia 60-70%, and Germany, the UK and the US 55%.
The company projects Thailand and Asian markets should continue to grow over the next decade thanks to a positive economy, especially in big countries like China and India.
An increasing number of low-cost airlines have made budget travel easier, helping to boost tourism in the region and promote more journeys among the middle class.
Apart from Thailand, the company has expanded its business to India and Singapore.
It plans to enter the Malaysian market by year-end.
Mr Lynn said 70-75% of bookings through the company's website are domestic trips, and the balance are international tours.
AirAsia Expedia has a strong relationship with 400 low-cost airlines worldwide and more than 4,000 hotels in Thailand as well as 145,000 hotels worldwide, which Mr Lynn hopes will spur online booking.
The 100-million-baht budget will be spent this year through various media channels including social media, newspapers, magazines and TV commercials.
The Irresistible Sale starts next Tuesday with air-ticket and accommodation packages 10-40% cheaper than separate booking prices.
The company is a collaboration between Expedia and AirAsia, the Malaysia-based budget airline.
Its strategy is to penetrate the online travel market in Thailand by offering a one-stop service that combines air tickets and accommodations at reasonable prices.
