I feel really sorry for you that you couldn't enter Paraguay and Argentina. If you like cheap stuffs, you've just missed shopping paradise overthere. But if shopping is not your fancy, you don't miss anything at all.......not at all.
I don't know about visa staffs as your guide told you. For me, my guide told me that I could enter those two countries for shopping. It's similar to Thai-Burmese Border that you can cross the border and come back within that day. I didn't need any visa at that time. At the border check-point, my guide just went to see the officers and told them how many people there were in the car and where we were from........and that's it!! we were at another side of the boder. Anyway, from what my guide told me, just chinese and Korean cannot cross the border.
And yes. I flew from Australia. I reckon it must be more expensive flying from Thailand.
By the way, have you come back from Brazil? Where did you go? and What do you like most about Brazil?
