evevey time i visited thailand, i did the train trip to mahachai at least once. starting off from wongvian yai station, it reaches mahachai in about an hour. along the way, glimpses of rural life are still common, albeit shattered somewhat by the presence of factories and housing estates. the train is loud, hot, and utterly wonderful at only Baht 10. bird life is plentiful from the train window, though common, they nevertheless are happily appreciated by this birder. i enjoy strolling the wet market in mahachai, especially the fish market, abound with various riches from the sea. tropical fruits in season are also plentiful, together with numerous sweets i miss. the boat across to ta chalom is also an enjoyable ride. terns swoop, gulls dip, egrets stalk, kites soar, all made for an utterly happy crossing. usually, i hop on a motorcycle taxi to wat chonglom for a delicious sea food lunch. there is no bliss compared to enjoying food, with your binoculars at hand,to peruse any bird that may stray into your sight. i will add the refuge to my destination next time i am there. in february, the town holds a sea food festival. the choice is staggering, and i am like kid in a candy store (perhaps chu-choke is a better description!) unseen thailand, anyone!!!
