Emancipation works the kind of pure-pop magic that sets us all free.

Sets the gold standard for diva records in 2005. [May 2005, p.118]
80 The Guardian
Despite its grim title with its visions of messy self-absorption, The Emancipation of Mimi is - mostly - cool, focused and urban.

75 Entertainment Weekly
Heavy on ballads and midtempo love songs, it always keeps at least one foot (more often both feet) planted firmly in comforting old-school diva soul. [15 Apr 2005, p.76]
70 The New York Times
On "The Emancipation of Mimi," she disciplines herself into coherence, using fewer tricks and sounding more believable. She also finds what lesser singers can take for granted: a certain lightness that eases her constant sense of control. [11 Apr 2005]

70 Billboard
While her voice has lost some of its power through the years, "Mimi" deftly showcases her still-considerable pipes with strong lyrics and slick production.

70 Slant Magazine
But whatever the songs lack, they make up for in restraint--brevity keeps you wanting more, which is really Mimi's virtue.

70 PopMatters
Carey does not completely hearken back to her old days, but The Emancipation of Mimi does prove her staying power.

67 Stylus Magazine
Its easily the strongest album that shes made in this millennium, but suffers from the fact that her vocals have deteriorated.

60 All Music Guide
It might not be as hip as it thinks it is, nor is it as catchy as it should be, but it's smooth and listenable.

A set of predictable, plastic, street-tough R&B jams.

50 Rolling Stone
There aren't any great songs among Mimi's club tunes and pop-chart-conscious tracks, and Carey is still suffering from a serious crisis of confidence.

50 Los Angeles Times
Her sadly depleted voice is again propped up by multi-tracking, and the occasional dog-deafening shriek hardly proves she's recaptured her early acrobatic power. [10 Apr 2005]
20 New Musical Express
'Mimi' manages the unique trick of being self-indulgent without actually ever sounding much like Mariah. [16 Apr 2005, p.51]

Calling it trash would be an insult to trash.

This really really sucks. Once again, the music industry(100% corrupt), the retards of the American public(85%) and the grammies (100% old and irrelevant) conspire to give me indigestion and diarhea.

BEst album of her Career! The voice is indeed back and the writing though alittle juvinile is fun and still consistent. Many artist would do good to take note from her ability to have fun on her records and not take themselves so seriously. She is a lengend indeed and will always be the greatest and hardest working talent in the music industry.

Anyone who suks obviously doesnt know good music. yes, maybe she like flopped her last 2 songs, and she may have already has her pinnacle of her career, but this album proves mariah still has what we all want. her song 'we belong together' shows us she still ahs what it takes to go to #1, 'shake it off' tells us why the only song stopping it from reaching #1 was 'we belong together', and it has all the range from songs when ur heart is broken to when u want to get up and dance. also on the release dont forget about us, this slow ballad is more proof y mariah has reached #1 two times in 2005, more than any artist that year. also she is assured to win at least 4 of her 8 grammies. Mariah I know you'll get more than 20 #1's and beat every other artist!!!!

Mariah Carey has proved herself over her 15 years. Although Glitter was a major flop and Charmbracelet destroyed her vocals, this album is Mariah picking herself back up. With 17 #1's she's tied with Elvis Presley and maybe she'll beat Beatles. This album has songs that are a reminder why she has broken so many records. Although I think this album is her pinnacle in this millennium, Mariah always proves us wrong over and over again. Also I'd like to forgive all those people who are too narrow-minded to realize Mariah's success.
