    2005 Critics' & Artist' Choice
The Year's Top Releases According To The Billboard Staff & A Host Of Artists

The Billboard Information Group staff and the freelance writers who contribute to the magazine and the Web site reflect a wide range of musical tastes. The proof is in is our annual Critics' Choice roundup, where all parties are invited to submit a list of their top 10 favorite albums, singles or musical events of the past year.

While Billboard's various charts reflect the retail sales of albums and the sales and airplay of singles, these lists are based only the personal favorites of the staffers.

In tallying the top-10 lists, only albums were counted for our overall critics' choice list (singles and live shows appear in some lists, but weren't used to tabulate the final results). An inverse point system -- where 10 points were given to a title listed at No. 1, and one point given to a No. 10 entry -- was used to determine the rankings.

A total of 51 staff lists were submitted, with hundreds artists mentioned among the lot. My Morning Jacket's "Z" (ATO/RCA) was the overall points winner, followed by a tie between the Rolling Stones' "A Bigger Bang" (Virgin) and M.I.A.'s "Arular" (XL) and the New Pornographers' "Twin Cinema" (Matador).

While his 2004 debut, "The College Dropout," finished second to Franz Ferdinand's self-titled debut in last year's poll, West's newest release, "Late Registration," did not crack the top 10 this year. However, two albums that he produced and issued on his own G.O.O.D. Music imprint (Common's "Be" and John Legend's "Get Lifted") appear on the 2005 top 10 tally.

กระดิ่งHere are the top 10 albums of 2005 as chosen by our panel of critics:

    1. My Morning Jacket, "Z" (ATO/RCA) -- 52 points
    2. Tie: The Rolling Stones, "A Bigger Bang" (Virgin) and M.I.A., "Arular" (XL) -- 43 points.
    3. The New Pornographers, "Twin Cinema" (Matador) -- 41 points
    4. Common, "Be" (G.O.O.D. Music/Geffen) - 39 points
    5. Sleater-Kinney, "The Woods" (Sub Pop) - 37 points
    6. Sufjan Stevens, "Illinois" (Asthmatic Kitty) - 36 points
    7. Tie: Thelonious Monk Quartet With John Coltrane, "At Carnegie Hall" (Blue Note/Thelonious Records) and Queens Of The Stone Age, "Lullabies To Paralyze" (Interscope) - 31 points
    8. Spoon, "Gimme Fiction" (Merge) - 28 points
    9. Tie: Jack Johnson, "In Between Dreams" (Brushfire/Universal) and Mariah Carey, "The Emancipation of Mimi" (Island Def Jam) - 26 points
