ELAINE’S A MILLION-TO-ONE FRIEND 2/19/2006



WHEN Ballymena bookies’ shop manager Peter Clarke knew he’d landed a spot on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, he set about forming his phone-a-friend panel.

Straightaway, Peter contacted local table quiz partner Elaine Nicholl.

But estate agent Elaine turned Peter’s request down FLAT!

Said Peter: "When it comes to showbiz, Elaine’s the one - her knowledge is phenomenal"

But Elaine was still reluctant.

She said: "I told him there was too much riding on it - I could already feel the nerves tingling at the very idea of it."

"I kept thinking, `What if I got the phonecall from Chris Tarrant to help Peter out and I got the answer wrong?’ - I mean, it could cost him thousands!"

But, after a little gentle persuasion, Elaine had a change of heart.

I felt guilty about letting him down - but at the same time I was praying he wouldn’t need to turn to me."

But, warned to be by the phone when the show was being recorded "just in case", came what turned out to be the most fateful call of Elaine’s life.

"At first I thought it was somebody sending me up," she laughs, "because it didn’t sound like Chris Tarrant."

But it was - and Peter was totally stuck! He had already won £16k - but to double it he needed to answer the question "The record company executive Tommy Mottola is the ex-husband of which singer?"


Recalls Elaine: "There were four options - Mariah Carey, Shania Twain, Celine Dion and Alanis Morrisette - but I didn’t need to hear them - I knew it right away."

Mariah Carey, Elaine told Peter, her voice trembling ever so slightly - and straight away he had doubled his winnings to £32k.

And although Peter fell at the next hurdle he is over the moon about his windfall - and Elaine’s timely contribution!

"I knew she was safe as houses," he quips.

Adds Elaine," I think I’ll just opt for pub quizzes from now on."
