    CBS had so few holes to fill on its prime-time schedule it announced a mere four new series on its fall 2006 lineup that it had to pad its upfront presentation Wednesday at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

    Helping sell the network were incoming "CBS Evening News" anchor Katie Couric ("How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Negotiate, negotiate, negotiate," she said), outbound anchor Bob Schieffer, who is coming off a week in which CBS’ newscast pulled ahead of normally second-place ABC, and Mariah Carey.

    Couric may have been the afternoon’s biggest "get," but the biggest hit was the surprise performance by Mariah Carey, who’s doing a CBS special next season.
