Hers would be a Cinderella success story, but for Mariah, childhood was anything but a fairy tale. Her parents, a biracial couple who divorced when she was 3, were victims of racial hatred - they "had their dogs poisoned, cars blown up," she recalled. While her mother supported her three kids, Mariah started singing lessons at 4, performing in grade school and was writing her own songs by junior high. In the end, there was a glass slipper of sorts. "I have about 1,000 pairs of shoes," she said.
