Metropol frontman Benjamin Tuffnell was born Jung Jung Ho on (or about) 13 May 1975 in Osan, Korea, and adopted by Glenn and JoAnne Tuffnell of Berkley Heights, New Jersey on 3 December 1975. As a child, Tuffnell grew up in suburban Detroit, Michigan. The youngest of four children, it was Tuffnells older brothers Steve and John who were the first to introduce him to music, and from a young age, Tuffnell listened to bands like The Who, Rush, The Rolling Stones, The Clash, Van Halen, and AC/DC.
In 1987, the Tuffnell family moved back to the east coast, settling in Basking Ridge, NJ. After two years at Ridge High School, Tuffnell transferred to the private boarding school Blair Academy. After graduation from Blair in 1993, Tuffnell attended Loyola College in Maryland on an academic and athletic scholarship. At Loyola, Tuffnell earned four varsity letters in Division I Mens Soccer, serving as captain in his senior year, and graduated in 1997 with a B.A. in Creative Writing and History.
Upon graduation from Loyola in 1997, Tuffnell accepted a year-long teaching position with Assumption College Rayong, in Thailands Rayong province, about two hours outside of Bangkok. Shortly after arriving in Thailand, Tuffnell met Gomut Attakasem (Tok), Noporn Imsaap (Rang), two of Thailands top studio musicians. Although initially communication was an obstacle, the group quickly became close friends, and Tuffnell began to make appearances with the band Shadow, at bars and clubs in the area. In 2000, Tuffnell relocated to Bangkok, where he reunited with Tok and Rang at T29, a bar run by Thai singer Viyada Komarrakul N. Nakorn. Here Tuffnell began to hone his singing talent, while playing with some of the countrys top studio musicians. In late 2002, Tok, Rang, and Tuffnell dissolved the band to concentrate on personal projects, and in 2003, Tuffnell was introduced to Liksa Liikala, and Metropol was formed.
