Mariah has ALWAYS been honest about having very fragile vocal chords!!! She didn't even want to tour in the beginning of her carer because she said herself that her vocal chords couldn't handle the stress of a tour.
So I think its something she has known and admited, but people want to see and hear her live, and its expected ( and it doesn't help that whitney & Celine her peers, are so damn good at singing live!!) so she tried, and she was descent at it in the beginning, just because she had the vocal chops to wow people, even if she didn't have the stage presence!
However, once her voice started to decline she didn't have anything to go behind, she is not a dancer that can put on some extravagant show (i.e. janet, madonna, beyonce...) and she doesn't have the class of say (dionne, or whitney...) to captivate a crowd even if the voice wasn't all there.
SO she basically has to keep up the facad that she is an imaculate vocalist, and a LOT OF PEOPLE still belive mariah can blow live!!! you would be suprised how many people have no clue that mariah lips most of her Tv performances they would argue with you that she Can SANG and that everything she does is live, just because she has a mic in her hand!
I say she is doing what she thinks she is supposed to do!! I personally would love it if she re-arranged her songs and sang them lower and used her lower soulful tone, even if its raspy! But she feels she has to keep this facad that she has a 5 octave range... and a lot of people know her for that so she keeps it going.
