Cosmetics company Elizabeth Arden Inc reported a surprise quarterly profit on Friday, helped by a new Mariah Carey perfume and strong sales overseas, and stood by its full-year profit forecast, sending its shares up as much as 10 percent.
Net income was $350,000, or 1 cent a share, in the fiscal first quarter that ended Sept 30, compared with a loss of $1.3 million, or 5 cents a share, a year earlier.
Excluding restructuring costs, the company had a profit of 4 cents a share. On that basis, analysts were expecting a loss of 5 cents, on average, according to Reuters Estimates.
Arden itself had forecast a loss, citing stepped-up spending for the M by Mariah Carey perfume.
Sales rose 6.7 percent to $271.8 million, helped by the Carey perfume launch as well as an 18 percent rise in international sales of its Elizabeth Arden brand products, and demand for its higher-end perfumes in the United States.
