Marc Jacobs Loves Mariah
Famed fashion designer Marc Jacobs covers the Winter 2007/Spring 2008 issue of the UK men's fashion magazine, Arena Homme+. In the cover story, Marc admits his love for Mariah Carey.
"It is this courage to be himself and trust his instincts which has never been greater. 'People put you in boxes. But I like Sonic Youth and I like Mariah Carey as well!' he states emphatically. 'People like you to position things as ironic choices. I don't want to do that: these are just honest admissions. I think Mariah Carey is an amazing artist. This is not to say that I do not like other things, or that I am comparing what one does to another. It's a guilty pleasure, of sheepishly admitting you like something; it's about just saying you like it. People are weird sometimes. People have a primitive connection to things and there is just this weird shame about admitting to it. People are controlled by this shame of what other people will see as right, correct, cool or whatever. Shameless. [Stylist and collaborator] Alister Mackie put that word in my head. When he talks about the behaviour of other people it's, "Oh, shameless." Ages and ages ago he said it and thought, what a perfect word. I think it is something to aspire this shamelessness.'
Would Marc Jacobs have said such a thing a few years ago? Has he himself entered his shameless Mariah-leaving-Tommy-Mottola phase? What on earth will phase three of the mid-life crisis be like? Let's hope it is as good as the other two."
