Holocaust: A Music Memorial Film from Auschwitz, the BBC Two film featuring violinist Maxim Vengerov, has picked up an award for Best Arts Programme (International) at the 33rd International Emmy Awards Gala, held in New York on Monday 21 November.
The film was a BBC co-production with Canada's CBC, Poland's TVP, and Germany's ZDF channels in association with Czech TV and was made to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The film followed three survivors from the concentration camp who were forced to perform music for SS and Nazi officers in the camp's orchestras and bands.
For the first time since its liberation, permission was granted for music to be heard in Auschwitz and a number of leading musicians were brought there to perform music for the film, including Vengerov and soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian. The 90-minute film included music connected with the Holocaust and was all performed on location, interwoven with accounts from the three survivors. Music included Gorecki's mournful Symphony No. 3, Bach's Chaconne performed by Vengerov and Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time.
