My Favourite Drummers Are: Virgil Donati, Thomas Lang, Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, John Blackwell Jnr, Steve Smith, Greg Bissonette, Tony Royster Jnr, Dennis Chambers, Billy Cobham, Mike Cosgrove, Billy Ward, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton, Papa Jo Jones, Louie Bellson, Hillary Jones, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, John Bonham, Dom Famularo, Travis Barker, Chad Smith, Steve Gadd, Jeff Porcaro, Terry Bozzio, Akira Jimbo, Tayler Hawkins, Neil Peart, Lars Ulrich, Morgan Rose, Dave Grohl, Abe Laboriel Jr, Paul Wertico, Stewart Copeland, Steve Ferrone, Jack DeJohnette, Carter Beauford, David Garibaldi, David Jones, Marco Minnemann, Horacio Hernandez, Will Calhoun, Giovanni Hidalgo, Darryn Farrugia, Gordon Rytmeister, John Tempesta, Mike Portnoy, Cindy Blackman, Rick Allen, Sheila E, Chad Wackerman, Damian Corniola, Sam Aliano, NZers: Frank Gibson Jnr, Bill Brown, Matt Edwards, Richard Te One, Jacob Randall, Raymond Biggs, Ian Jones, Tom Larkin, Michael Franklin-Browne, Matt Collier, Lance Philip, Ritesh Parbhu, George Westrupp, Des Mullins, Drum Guru Roger Watkins, Antony Donaldson, Reuben Bradley, Bruce Morley to name just a few... but there are so many more I can't think of right now...
My Worst Drumming Moment: 1) I was playing Voodoo Child at Old Town Hall, Wellington, in front of heaps of screaming girls (who were really there for K-Lee) & I took the opportunity to really build up to a really explosive finish, but my main kick beater dislodged itself...leaving me sounding like a real wannabe drummer smashing cymbals and toms out of sync. 2) Not my worst moment but certainly an experience I don't want to repeat too many times: I use to play in an originals & middle-of-the-road/jazzy band. We had a gig at a venue where the crowd were definitely looking to rock & dance to medium/heavy rock covers all night.I remember thinking that this is going to be an interesting night. We started at 9pm with a medium sized crowd building but the place turned into a cemetary by 11pm...with only close relatives of the band still left (mourning)lol. We were scheduled to keep playing till 1am! But they let us go an hour early (early parole release) lol. It might have had something to do with the fact that we were repeating some of the material. But Hey! It's all good! It's all part of the musicians apprenticeship me thinks, Hahaha lol
3) Here's one of those real irritating situations when the last song that the band was playing had no drums so you turn off the snare so it won't buzz. But the next song is up tempo and requires drums but you forget to put the snare back on, and if your snare mechanism is like mine where you need both hands to put the snare back on, you spend half of the song trying to fix it, while the snare sounds like a timbale, and your band members keep looking back at you assisting to make it even more obvious! Cringe cringe! My Best Drumming Moment: Playing the National Anthem with the NZSO at the Michael Fowler Centre in 2000. Playing support for Tommy Igoe on his North Island clinic tour in 2006.
I Want My Drumming To Take Me To: As far as my abilities will allow. My Advice To Other Drummers Would Be: Always wear ear protection. My Dad's friend has been drumming for 15+ years and has never played a gig but jams to his stereo a lot really loud and doesn't wear any ear protection. He's lost about 40% of his hearing on his snare drum ear. It doesn't matter if you read, don't read, or don't want to read drumming's not all about that... its about how you feel while your playing. If you want to be fast & loud, go for it! If you want to be like Dave Weckl then do it! Personally I love all types of drumming. You should see Wellington's Antony Donaldson (Avant Garde Jazz)...awesome....no time sigs just plays totally for the moment, doesn't plan it but lives it. Cool!
Special Tips: If you're finding a piece difficult, just slow it right down & gradually build up slowly. If you're still having trouble, ask a drumming friend, your tutor, or scroll down the Drum Connexions profiles, you may be able to find someone there who can help.
Comments: If you can, you should reserve some time during your practise where you just totally free flow all your chops, forget about strict rudiments, but intermingle them with everything, open up & go for it (not planned). Let the sound & feel take you to that other place where it all just feels right & grooves in your own opinion 'cos that's who's opinion really counts! You'll find the more times you do it, the closer you will get to finding & developing your own unique style.
Web Site Comments: Drum Connexions is a great place for sharing ideas and information. Cool!
