2-CD classical music set from Universal Music on great sales !
These are available from a UK-based web store at 7 UKP (less than 400 Bath !) for each set (shipping included). I guess this is because UK economy is now in resession and exchange rate against That Bath is quite good.

- BOCCHERINI The Best of, inc. the Minuet, I Musici, Romero, Casals, Gazzelloni, Gendron, AMSF, Chamber Ensemble, Quartetto Italiano, New Philharmonia Orchestra / Leppard Philips Duo
- BRUCH The Complete Violin Concertos, Scottish Fantasy. Salvatore Accardo, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig / Masur Philips Duo
- DVORAK Complete Piano Trios incl. the 'Dumky' Trio. Beaux Arts Trio. Philips Duo
- DVORAK The Symphonies Nos. 4-6 London Symphony Orchestra / Kertesz Double Decca. These symphonies are not widely performed but they are the joy to listen to.
- MOZART Complete String Trios & Duos. Grumiaux Trio, Arthur Grumiaux, Arrigo Pelliccia, Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Chamber Ensemble. Philips Duo
- MOZART The Great Serenades including Eine Kleine Nachtmusik Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields/ Sir Neville Marriner Philips Duo. This set include "Haffner" and "Posthorn" serenades which are superbly performed with good sound.
- MOZART The Works for Flute, 2 Flute Concertos, 4 Flute Quartets, Concerto for Flute, Harp & Orchestra, Nicolet, Bennett, Thunemann, Ellis, Grumiaux Trio, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra/ Davis Philips Duo. The 4 flute quartets are plesane works.
- RESPIGHI The Essential: Pini di Roma, Feste Romane, Fontane di Roma, Gli Uccelli, Trittico Botticelliano etc. Charles Dutoit, Lorin Maazel, Jesus Lopez-Cobos Double Decca. The 3 Ancients Airs and Dances are surprisingly beautifule in the traditional baroque style. They are my favorite of Respighi's works.
- RODRIGO Complete Concertos for Guitar & Harp Michel, The Romeros, Academy of St Martin in the Fields / Marriner, Orchestre National del'Opera de Monte-Carlo / Alemeida Philips Duo. Buy this set for the lesser known works like Concierto para Una Fiesta, Concierto Andaluz, Concierto Mardigral. The Romeros are great guitarists.
- SCHUBERT Complete Trios, Beaux Arts Trio, Grumiaux Trio Philips Duo. If you never know Schubert's Piano Trios before, you will love them once you hear this set.
- SCHUBERT Symphonies Nos. 5, 8 & 9 Wiener Philharmoniker / Solti Double Decca. These are the best performance of #5, 8, and 9 performed in a great romanticcally-oriented style. Great sound as well.
- SCHUBERT The Last Four Quartets, Death & the Maiden, Rosamunde, Quartettsatz, Quartetto Italiano Philips Duo. I have quite a few set of these works and this set is the best of them all.
- SCHUMANN 4 Symphonies. Wiener Philharmoniker / Leonard Bernstein. DG Double. This is a romatically-orient performance that is admirable.
- SCHUMANN Complete Piano Trios, Piano Quartet & Quintet. Beaux Art Trio, Samuel Rhodes, Dolf Bettelheim. Philips Duo. I do not know the Trio but the Piano Quintet and Quartet are works of beauty and enjoyment.
- SIBELIUS Symphonies Nos. 1, 2 & 4, Finlandia, Karelia Suite. Philharmonia Orchestra / Vladimir Ashkenazy Double Decca. Those who like Sibelius should add this set to their collections.
- STRAUSS R Horn Concertos No. 1 & 2, Violin Concerto, Oboe Concerto, Duett-conertino, Burleske Tuckwell, Belkin, Gulda, Ashkenazy Double Decca. The Burleske is in mono but the rest are in good stereo sound. All the concertos in this set demonstrate that Strauss is a capable composer of concerto form. Some of them can plesantly surprise you.
- TCHAIKOVSKY Symphonies Nos. 4, 5 & 6 Pathetique, Berliner Philharmoniker / Karajan DG Double. This set may not match the performance of Leningrad Philharmonic under Mravinsky (from DG Original series) but it is not too far below. At this price, this set is a good buy if you cannot find Mravinsky set at this comparable price.
These are sets to aviod due to unsatisfactory performance or sound :
- BACH Complete Violin Sonata BWV 1014-1023 Arthur Grumiaux, Christiane Jaccottet, Philippe Mermoud Philips 2cds
- BACH The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080, Musical Offering, BWV 1079, AMSF / Marriner, Philips Duo. The sound is not satisfactory.
- VIVALDI L'Estro Armonico, 4 Concertos for Wind Instruments Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields / Neville Marriner Double Decca. The performance is not up to ASMF standard in Philips era. The sound is not good.
Anyone has other recommendations ?
