Michael Jackson’s Hair To Be Turned Into Diamonds
If the death of Michael Jackson hasn’t sparked enough outrageous spectacles, here’s another one: an American firm plans to create diamonds from a lock of the King of Pop’s hair.
LifeGem, the company set to immortalize Jacko’s locks, specializes in converting DNA into diamonds. The company claims to possess a lock of the Thriller singer’s hair from when it accidentally caught fire on the set of filming a Pepsi commercial in 1984.
Supposedly, Ralph Cohen, the executive producer of the Pepsi video shoot, collected some of the charred strands of Jackson’s hair and put them in his pocket while Jackson was being rushed off to the hospital. He kept it for 25 years before selling it to John Reznikoff, who has built a collection of hair from famous people including Marilyn Monroe, Abraham Lincoln, and John F. Kennedy.
Reznikoff has teamed up with LifeGem to produce an exclusive set of diamonds from a portion of the charred hair - the rest will remain in his personal collection.
According to LifeGen founder, Dean VanderBiesen: “We specialize in creating diamonds from locks of hair. Our plan is to give people an opportunity to own a diamond made from Michael Jackson's DNA.” He added: “We are currently evaluating Jackson’s hair sample to determine how many diamonds can be created. This will be a limited collection and we anticipate great interest.”
As of now, the company expects to manufacture approximately 10 diamonds from Jackson's hair.
A different company, Gemory LLC, has also figure a way to preserve Jackson’s memory for eternity – by injecting a photograph of Michael Jackson into a series of limited edition diamonds. Using state-of-the-art nanotechnology, the company injects a high-resolution photo inside a diamond while maintaining the stone’s features.
