เพลงคริสต์มาส
เริ่มมีขึ้นในศตวรรษที่ 5 ซึ่งในสมัยนั้น มีทั้งพระสงฆ์และฆราวาสเป็นผู้แต่ง ร้องเป็นภาษาลาติน ลักษณะของเพลงเป็นแบบสง่า เน้นถึงความหมายของการเสด็จมา ของพระเยซูเจ้า แต่ในศตวรรษที่ 12 ได้มีวิวัฒนาการใหม่ในด้านเพลงนี้ เริ่มในประเทศอิตาลี โดยนักบุญฟรังซิส อัสซีซี และนักบวชคณะฟรังซิสกัน เป็นผู้มีส่วนในการสนับสนุน ให้มีเพลงคริสต์มาสแบบใหม่ ซึ่งชาวบ้านชอบ คือมีท่วงทำนองที่ร่าเริงกว่า และเน้นถึงความชื่นชมยินดี ในโอกาสคริสต์มาสนี้ เพลงเหล่านี้เป็นภาษาลาติน และภาษาพื้นเมือง เพลงหนึ่งที่แต่งในสมัยนั้น (แต่งคำร้องในปี ค.ศ.1274) และยังใช้อยู่จนถึงปัจจุบัน คือ

ในภาษาลาติน เพลงคริสต์มาส ที่เรานิยมร้องมากที่สุดในปัจจุบันได้แต่งขึ้นในศตวรรษที่ 19 จากประเทศเยอรมัน และประเทศอังกฤษเป็นส่วนใหญ่ เพลงที่มีชื่อเสียงมากได้แก่

เพลง Silent Night, Holy Night
ความเป็นมาของเพลงนี้คือ วันก่อนวันฉลองคริสต์มาส ของปี ค.ศ.1818 คุณพ่อโจเซฟ โมห์ เจ้าอาวาสวัดที่โอเบิร์นดอฟ ประเทศออสเตรีย ได้ข่าวว่าออร์แกนในวันเสีย ทำให้วงขับร้อง ไม่สามารถร้องเพลงตามที่ซ้อมไว้ได้ คุณพ่อเองตั้งใจ จะแต่งเพลงคริสต์มาสใหม่ หลังจากแต่งเสร็จ ก็เอาไปให้เพื่อนคนหนึ่งชื่อ ฟรานซ์ กรูเบอร์ ที่อยู่หมู่บ้านใกล้เคียงใส่ทำนอง ในคืนวันที่ 24 นั้นเอง สัตบุรุษวัดนี้ ก็ได้ฟังเพลง Silent Night เป็นครั้งแรก โดยการเล่นกีตาร์ประกอบการขับร้อง ซึ่งกลายเป็นเพลงที่นิยมมากที่สุดทั่วโลก
