K-OTIC life - Jongbae monkeys around
By Suwitcha Chaiyong
Korean singer Jongbae Park isn't too talkative with the media, but the 20-year-old's good looks and friendly personality have made him a popular member of Thai boy band K-otic. When Jongbae does decide to speak up, his fans always enjoy his loveable sense of humour.
Jongbae recently worked on a special project called Monkey Hero with K-otic bandmates Koen, 17, and Kenta, 19. Monkey Hero featured the catchy hit "Unbelievable."
All five members of K-otic are now back together and getting ready to release their new album, so Student Weekly asked Jongbae to tell us about his chaotic pop life.
• Did you know • Jongbae received a scholarship to study Communication Arts at Stamford International University
Student Weekly: How are your Thai language skills coming along?
Jongbae: I'm getting better at speaking Thai. I can understand almost everything when I listen to a conversation, but the intonation is difficult. I try to improve by talking to my friends and learning new words in different situations.
Student Weekly: Have you ever felt awkward trying to communicate with fans or the media?
Jongbae: Communicating with fans isn't hard because they always listen and try to understand what I say. But TV shows have always been difficult. Everything happens so fast on TV and it's hard for me to think clearly.
Student Weekly: The Monkey Hero producers said they picked you for the project because you're like a monkey. Is that true?
Jongbae: I'm always hyper, happy and naughty like a monkey, so Monkey Hero really suited my personality!
Student Weekly: What do you miss most about Korea after living in Thailand for five years?
Jongbae: Winter. I like cold weather and skiing is really fun. Also, you can wear many different clothes to keep warm in winter. But when it's hot all the time, you still feel hot even if you take your shirt off.
Student Weekly: Are Thai teens much different from Korean kids?
Jongbae: Not really, but students in Korea have to study like crazy. Getting into university is so important that Korean kids often stay at school until 11 pm. After school, many students go to tutoring schools, and sometimes they don't get home until 2 am. They don't have any time to hang out with friends.
Student Weekly: Did you have chance to talk to any Korean artists during the Asia Song Festival in Seoul last year?
Jongbae: I talked to Jessica Jung from Girl's Generation at a press conference. She didn't know that I was Korean, so she spoke to me in English. She was really surprised when I answered an interview question in Korean!
Student Weekly: Why do you think South Korean music so popular throughout Asia at the moment?
Jongbae: Korea has a small showbiz industry, but they're really good at promoting artists. Korean artists also live together in dormitories and they practise constantly, even if they're still students. The artists are good because they practise so hard.
Student Weekly: Since you've been working in Thailand, is there anything that you still want to improve?
Jongbae: I want to improve my singing, dancing and every other entertainment skill. Most of all, I want to get better at speaking Thai. If I can speak Thai fluently, I should have more opportunities to work in the Thai entertainment industry.
