Jaebum Opens Up In Interview By: kim8983
10asia recently landed an interview with the very busy Park Jaebum! Check out a full translation of the interview below! What are your thoughts on his replies?
Q. Why did you decide to make your concert a hip-hop festival instead of a stage?
A. Today is Lupe Fiasco's concert and Tiger JK's. I wanted to be together with them on that kind of stage, but for one month, I've had a cough, so I'm kind of nervous about that. Because even though I'll only sing and won't dance, I'm still afraid I might cough...I went to the hospital, but they said it was probably due to the smog used in the movie. They just said to drink a lot of water (laughs). But (right now) it's not getting better.
Q. It's your first solo stage; how is it different from being with a group?
A. This time, I won't dance as I sing. When I sing "Count On Me", I think it'll be weird if I dance along to it. And, there is a song that I wrote that my my friend produced called "Bestie". I'm going ot sing that. Also, I thought it wouldn't be right if I didn't do a dance, so I'm going to bboy for a little bit with some of my hyungs (brothers).
Q. After you presented B.o.B's "Nothin' On You" remix titled "Count On Me",you started to become more active. There must have been burdens on you because of peoples' expectations.
A. Honestly, I didn't have any expectations nor any burdens. I uploaded "Nothin' On You" on YT and people seemed to really like it, so Warner Bros. Asia contacted me and asked if I wanted to do it. I like B.o.B, so of course that's why I accepted. I'm just so thankful that the fans really like it.
Q. Didn't you have a hard time in the United States?
A. It wasn't really me having a hard time. The people who were around me were having a hard time, and that made me sad. If you loose an opportunity, there is always another one that comes up so I thought it was okay, but it was just hard for me because the people around me were having such a hard time. I didn't think, "Oh, I will have to make a comback at this time". I never thought that. I think you just have to go with the flow. They said to do "Hype Nation", so I just said I would do it if I could do it with my bboy crew AOM, and that's why I came.
Q. But even after your contract in Korea ended, you were still able to come back. What made you decide to come back?
A. Honestly, having reasons like "I must succeed, I must succeed" as the sole reason to come back, just makes everything more difficult (or unable to happen). I'm so thankful to the fans. So that's why, whatever I do, I want to be a positive influence for those people. If it weren't for the fans, I don't think I would have had the heart to come back, and the activities I do now are so that I can repay the fans in any way possible; because the fans wanted more than anything else to see me back on stage.
Q. With that point, didn't it worry you that fans boycotted your ex-company?
A. I was very sad about that. Hating someone at the expense of liking me is not something that I want. I just want everyone to get along. I don't like it when people hate and curse about others. I just wish the fans would calm down a little (laughs), and get along well with each other. I'm really sad when I see fans fighting with each other, and it's because of me that they are fighting. I think that life is too short to be living with a feeling of hatred. So, I just want to always think good thoughts, and if there are problems, believe they will get better later as time passes. I want to show those kinds of thoughts to more people.
Q. Why do you think your fans love you so much?
A. Ummm...(laughs) I have a lot of nuna (older sister) fans. I think they have feelings of pity for me and like me as mothers would. Like, maybe they feel like moms and they console me and want to comfort me? (laughs)
Q. But as you continue your activities, there will be people that like you as well as people that hate you. What do you think about that?
A. I don't really think about it. Those are not people that know me personally. Even if they curse at me or don't like me, I try not to think about it or take it to heart; I just think that I just need to do what I'm gonna do and do my best. Be nice to the people around me, be nice to the fans, and do my best to help everyone and be a positive influence. I think everything will work out if I do it that way.
Q. Because you're honorable/openminded?
A. Yes.
Q. In America, you couldn't do what you wanted to be doing; how did you handle that?
A. It was very hard. Because of me, many people were affected or hurt, and I was also sad. So, I just didn't do anything. I just practiced, and got a part-time job at a tire shop. But, it helped a lot because I started bboying again. I liked dancing with them again. When I was doing activities (in Korea) I coudn't bboy. So, my body was itchy. Even though I couldn't do activities (in Korea), it was still okay because I could bboy.
Q. When you officialy start your activities, what kind of music style do you want to do?
A. It's not that I want to have a clear division and say, "I want to do hip hop; I want to do RnB." Right now, it's not like I can sing as well as Kim Jo Han, and I can't even rap as cooly as JK hyung (brother). But instead, I want to do both together and develop. And becasue I want to dance, I want to include that as well and do it all. By any chance, do you know Drake? That's the kind of music style (I want to do). I also like Usher, or Chris Brown. I also want to do music that I make.
Q. Right now, do you have any music produced by yourself?
A. I haven't produced anything yet. I have written lyrics and done a little bit of melody though. I wrote the lyrics for "Bestie", and the beats were made by my friend. It's not in English, but in Korean, so I don't know if the lyrics will make sense (laughs), I'm nervous to see what people's reactions will be.
Q. Have you decided on any musicians to put in your new album? Or, do you have any muscians you are interested in working with?
A. I actually have worked with a lot of people to make music lately. I've collaborated with Dok2, Brave Brothers, and I've also currently collaborating with Kim Jo Han. And personally, I really like Taeyang. I want to work with Taeyang.
Q. Right now you are currently in a situation where you can do music however you want and do it comfortably, right?
A. That's right. I want to work with many musicians. Someone that I like can say, "Do you like this?" and I can just say, "Yes I want to do it." I really like this.
Q. Are you going to make your album in this way as well? A. Of course. I think that's the way good music is made.
Q. If you make music in that way, you will have to be involved in producing it, and the burden will be bigger. What do you think about that?
A. I REALLY like it. (laughs) I think it has to be this way so that better music will come out. Since I do music that I like, I work harder becasue I can do the kind of music style I want to do. It's also like that with the songs, with dance, with my hairstyle, etc. I can choose what I like.
Q. Do you want to act also?
A. Yes, I want to. I want to act in funny scenes. Like, in sitcoms. But, I think I will have to practice more. As I'm filming "Hype Nation", one time, I watched the monitor later after doing a scene. It didn't come out as well as I expected. I thought I had made one expression, but it didn't come out that way.
Q. How was the hype nation filming?
A. There wasn't as much dance as I thought there would be. (laughs) There's no dance scenes other than the battle scenes; the rest is just a lot of fighting and yelling. (laughs)
Q. Right now, you are the paraolympics ambassador. In the future, do you want to participate in societal matters also, and just be a singer?
A. Of course. That would be nice. Whether it be family, friends, or fans, I think it's good to do that sort of thing with good people.
Q. What is your goal as a musician?
A. I'm not sure. It's not that I don't have goals. For now, my goal is to repay my fans in whatever way possible, and so, I want to try by singing good songs, or being on stage so that they can see me. Soon, there is going to be a new product that will come out and I want to show them a cool appearance with proper dancing. I want to show a cool me to my fans and express my own songs as well, step by step.
Q. Do you have any role models as a musician?
A. Michael Jackson. (laughs) Because he's the best.
Q. What do you want to do from now on?
A. I've always wanted to be in a position where I can help my family and friends. However, now, I want to be in a position where I can help more people. Whether it be fans, or people having a hard time. People will look at me and we will be able to move together, because it would be a better world if everyone helped each other out.
Q. Anything you want to say to the fans?
A. Whatever oppportunities I get from now on, it's all becasue of the fans. It's not because I do well, and it's not because I'm great. It's all because of the fans. Really I...can't express it in words. How thankful I am. I will make sure to repay you guys.
