Let us end the "Look for a Star" confusion!
From the 1960 British-made film "Circus of Horrors" comes a song that has caused so much confusion over the years: "Look for a Star," a tune that lacks any connection whatsoever to the film.
The song was written by the legendary Tony Hatch, using the pseudonym Mark Anthony. Years later Hatch would make Petula Clark a worldwide superstar.
The "Look for a Star" heard in the film is by Garry Mills, and his record (Imperial 5674) is the original. Unfortunately, it is in many ways a rather poor recording.
Two vocal cover versions immediately came out and all three made the Top 30. The best of the batch, and the best-seller, is credited to Garry Miles (Liberty 55261).
The incredible similarity between Garry Mills and Garry Miles caused tremendous confusion, and even today you'll find some postings incorrectly identifying their own audio.
At the time, Garry Miles (later known as Buzz Cason) was singing lead for the Statues, whose version of "Blue Velvet" is among the best ever.
The third vocal is by Deane Hawley (Dore 554), who fortunately has a different sounding name.
Not another vocal, but an instrumental rendition by Billy Vaughn and His Orchestra (Dot 16106) also made the Top 30 in 1960.
