Jay Park is back. He will make a comeback through a stage on national broadcast on May 6th after releasing his 1st (mini) album, Take a Deeper Look. Even before starting his official activities, he received a response from abroad. The title track, ‘Abandoned’ took 1st place on iTunes Norway; on top of that, he received hot responses from unexpected countries such as Denmark and Canada.
But Jay Park had to come a long way around before reaching this place. Many things happened, but this is the first time that Jay Park got a chance to show his true colors. Through this album, Jay Park completely separated himself from the shadow of the group 2 PM. He has not only matured but his side as a musician is outstanding.
“I started practicing two months ago. I’m making a comeback on Music Bank- I’m really nervous. I’m feeling more anxious because I have to sing and dance to a song that I made myself. I have much affection for the song because I poured a lot of effort into it.”
According to Jay Park, this performance includes a mushy dance. When told that there has been a recent controversy regarding the ‘open-leg’ dance, he firmly says, “My dance is not sexual.” That there is an emotion to his dance. He believes that dance is art. Coming from him, who has an exceptional pride as a b-boy, these are his values and vision.
Jay Park participated in the producing of six out of the seven songs of this first album. This holds a special significance in the kpop industry. Jay Park’s presence is difficult to express in one term. Borrowing his words, Jay Park is a rapper, b-boy and a singer-songwriter.
“To be honest, the word ‘idol’ is awkward.” Jay Park slants his head. “I’m not an idol… mm… I’m more of a rapper, a b-boy and a singer-songwriter. I think of myself as an artist. If I have to choose one prefix, I choose b-boy.”
Jay Park is an artist-type idol, but that kind of image has not been appealed to the public. Compared to the marketing strategy of G-Dragon, there is a sense of underestimation when it comes to Jay. Jay Park as a b-boy is important, but he must appeal his image as a musician to the public.
“That’s true. It’s a problem that I have to solve. My personality nor my daily life is like that of an idol. Most of all, my music is not idol-style. But I’m not impatient to make people know who I am. I’m not a person who values being ‘first place’ the most. I have fun. That’s what is the most important to me.”
To Jay Park, music and dance are not a part of the job; it’s enjoyment. This was revealed in 2009 when he was going through hard times. “I was having a hard time back then. I hurt people but I was also hurt by the people. But even then, I danced and made music. It’s part of my body. I can’t get rid of them.”
Jay Park has no greed for many broadcast activities or winning first place on music programs. He only wants to enjoy the stage and show what Jay Park’s music is to the people. “If I had to name a goal, my goal is to let people know about Jay Park’s musicality. Ah, and get ready for my cunning performances.”
