You've got to thank Lady Gaga for promoting Thai culture, even if the way she did it provoked a feisty debate on the social media Evidently the "Born This Way" singer was born wearing fetish gear by Armani and an old-fashioned Siamese chada on her head.
There she was at Friday's show, in fishnet stockings, a thong and the traditional khon headpiece, riding a fat motorcycle. A fan snapped a photo and posted it online, and within minutes the virtual uproar threatened to drown out her concert.
Most critics were suffering from jerked knee. They assumed the chada had been added to Gaga's stage wardrobe just for Thailand. Rallying to her defence, fans explained that she'd simply spotted Waratchaya Pukrod in the audience wearing the ornamental helmet and spontaneously borrowed it during the song "Fear".
She'd earlier spotted Waratchaya in full regalia at her airport welcoming reception. Waratchaya, who tweets as @shadeofgaga, asked everyone to spread the word that the chada was hers.
So her fans viewed the wearing of the headpiece as a very touching moment. Gaga even asked which side faced front. "I want to wear it properly!"
She also spoke highly about Bangkok, saying it was the kind of place she would have preferred to grow up. And she appreciated that no groups here had protested her performance, as has happened in other countries.
"Hmmph," was more or less how the critics reacted. She'd accessorised her skimpy thong with a chada, and that hurts Thailand.
