Kangsom used to work as a singing teacher.
Year after year, the popular TV talent show The Star launches the careers of singers and entertainers like Bie Sukrit, Tono Pakin and Gun Napat. In the latest season, more than 20,000 hopefuls applied to compete with one another in more than five rounds of the competition.
The recent contest heated up when the three guys in the semi-final round — Jaruwat Cheawaram (Dome), 20, Tanatat Chaiyaat (Kangsom), 20 and Isariya Patharamanop (Hunz), 20 — battled it out in front of countless viewers. In the end, Dome emerged as the winner, while Kangsom and Hunz came second and third respectively.
All three performers soon released singles tailored to their individual styles. Dome recorded the ballad “Kam Atitan Duay Namta (A Prayer with Tears),” while Kangsom came out with the R&B track “Rak Thoe Yeep Sip See Chua Mong (Love You 24 Hours).” Pro dancer Hunz released a dance track complete with powerful choreography called “Bid (Twist).”
Student Weekly recently met up with the three rising stars at the GMM building to chat about their backgrounds and their new singles.
Student Weekly: Dome, how did you develop your fantastic talent without any formal music or voice training?
Dome: I’ve loved listening to music and singing since I was a kid. I took part in several singing competitions when I was at school and I learned a lot from that. I also had a part-time job singing in restaurants.
Student Weekly: Kangsom, why did you decide to post clips of yourself singing cover songs on YouTube?
Kangsom: It’s something that I saw many singers do to get noticed. I’d taken voice training courses for two years, so I felt confident about my abilities and decided to give it a shot. I got some positive feedback from my clips.
Student Weekly: What first inspired you guys to become professional singers?
Dome: I’d dreamed of being a singer since I was a child. Whenever I saw talented artists perform, I wanted to be like them.
Kangsom: I just love music. I play different musical instruments, but I found that I love singing the most.
Hunz: I’d been a back-up dancer for several singers from The Star and I wanted a chance to progress like them.
Student Weekly: Which moment thrilled you guys the most during the three month competition?
Dome: My first audition in Southern Thailand. The idea of performing alone in a cold room with three judges terrified me. I felt really stressed, but the judges turned out to be nice.
Hunz: The announcement of the eight finalists was exciting for me. I didn’t think I’d make it and was about to start crying when they announced my name as the eighth finalist.
Student Weekly: Dome, what does winning the contest mean to you?
Dome: It makes me feel that I want to make a big effort to develop my singing skills so that my supporters won’t be disappointed.
Student Weekly: How did you deal with it when some people tried to insult and discourage you?
Dome: Some people said that I couldn’t be a famous singer because of the way I look. But their insults helped me to improve my flaws. The most important thing is to not get discouraged.
Student Weekly: Kangsom and Hunz, how do you feel about some of your fans seeing you guys as a couple?
Hunz: If it pleases our fans, then we don’t mind. [Laughs.] But I can guarantee that we’re just friends!
Student Weekly: How did you guys feel about releasing your own singles?
Dome: When I first listened to my song, I cried with delight. I felt happy and proud, and I’m still excited whenever I sing this beautiful song.
Kangsom: My single totally represents me because my favourite music genres are hip-pop and R&B. I also wrote the rap part myself.
Hunz: I always dreamed of releasing my own single. I hope that my work will be successful internationally as well.
