    The Four Fatalities of F4
    1. The Lack of In-born Talent F4 is a group which was formed in short notice, due to the needs of a drama serial, yet its manager have to insist on them making their living on music. A group formed as a necessity of a drama serial is after all, only a temporary one, F4 was brought together not because the 4 of them have similar characteristics, rather it was because the 4 of them carried similarities to the anime characters. Such a unorthodox route had caused F4 to be a deformed baby right from its birth. The way a group is being pushed onto the glamourous-looking performing stage based simply on the ultimate influence of a drama serial is an unorthodox investment, yet this sort of unorthodox investment had let F4 earn a profit of HK$1.5 million after starting out for 1 year. However, this sort of profit margin is already an unexpected gain in itself, it's an almost impossible matter if you wish to continue getting this sort of surprising gains. Some people have had been quoted as saying that F4's success is equivalent to the achievement of Little Tigers. Undoubtedly, these 2 groups are the most popular among all the boybands, past and present, in the chinese entertainment scenes, but comparing F4 and Little Tigers, F4's limited music quality can only allow them to perform songs typical of boybands. F4's obedience is an ingredient churned out by the drama serial, to spice up the lagging entertainment scene. Their sudden popularity was but a new discovery by listeners who had got tired of the guitar-smashing generation of the chinese music scene towards the end of the last century. With the great success of the group, each member are now concentrating on choosing a route that will suit them the most. Be it albums or pictographies that they have released, what it eventually brought about was the disintegration of F4's devotees, each chose the one member whom befits their needs the most. Prior to F4, groups like them had never stayed together for long, and looking at the clues all around, it appears that their management company is also paving the way for their individual developments, rather than accomodating each other every now and then, they might as well fight for their individual selves. From the beginning, F4's internal confusion and disagreements have never ended, and this only prove that the eventual result is going to be disbandment. Vic Zhou and Jerry Yan are undoubtedly the most popular among the 4 of them, whereas Vanness Wu and Ken Chu are still stuck at the "ban4 hong2 bu4 hei1" stage, especially the latter, it could be said that he got the chance to appear at all sorts of events with thanks to F4.
    2. Poor Management Right now, in the eyes of outsiders, Angie Chai is not "F4's Mother", rather, she's "F4's Stepmother": - She gets commission of 60%, with the remaining 40% evenly split between F4, which equates to only 10% worth of earnings for each of them. F4's china segment of their world tour alone earned Chai RMB$15 million, whereas each F4 member only got RMB$2.5 million. These numbers aroused people's resentment towards the behaviour of F4's manager, but looking at these numbers, one can see alot of problems. On the surface, it looks like their manager is purely trying to get back what she invested in them, but in actual fact, she simply don't intend to invest in them as long-term money trees. Let the audience see till they are satisfied, let F4 show off till they are satisfied, let myself earn till I'm satisfied, F4 is not a long-term living body, their failure has been determined right from the start. With the completion of their Southeast-Asia tour in March next year, F4's contract with Angie Chai will also come to an end, and it seems unlikely that they'll extend their contract. At that time, the relationship between the manager and F4 will be like the case of a smashed glass bottle. She'll make full use of the last opportunity to earn the last bucket of gold. When faced with F4 this sort of hitting-top-prize group, no matter whoever is the manager, he'll will do the same, to earn as much as it comes. Example: 7th Dec 2002, Jerry Yan held a press conference in Taiwan, and amidst it, he lost control of his emotions and blasted his management company. Amidst the blow-up, he even cried. 3. The Lack of Real Talent With the standards of the singing skills of the members, basically, it won't be a problem for one to sing to their standards in KTV. Based on the standards of current singers, to sing off-key is not strange at all, what's surprising is they can actually sing off-key each and every time they perform. Add that to the uneven standards of the members, live performances were usually a catastrophe. Under the best circumstances, you'll remember the lightings of the stage, because that one, is definitely top of the tops. As artistes, among voice, looks and talent, F4 has only surpassing "looks", but lacks on the self-identifying "voice" and "talent". Putting their weak acting skills aside, their singing skills are really abominable. Their producer used bits and pieces to come up with the <Meteor Rain> album, but could not cover up the awkwardness of the boys' live performances, especially Zaizai with his country-style mandarin. Vanness Wu perhaps is the one with the best qualities, but if he wants to become like David Tao and Jay Chou sort of R&B music king, he still lacks power. Before they acted out in <Meteor Garden>, the four of them had not received any formal training. Thus to cover up the lack in this area, making poses became the only solution. Pity, not many people can accept the frequent 'turn-back-and-smile' of a few guys with long tresses. Example: 27th Oct 2001, at their first major concert performance, the four members went off-key and forgot lyrics continuingly.
    4. Over-exposure As compared to Jay Chou and the likes who started out at the same time as them, F4 seems to have to learn the rules of the entertainment circle from the scratch. Getting popular overnight has turned them into the current money-making trees of their manager and entertainment companies. Heavy workloads and lack of rest will eventually result in them becoming the sacrifice of this fickle-minded entertainment line - one in which idols can get popular within a short time, but also disappear within a short time. When they were type-setted as the characters in <Meteor Garden>, what they can follow up on can only be instant productions - reproductions of the same formula over and over again. But i juz felt that there's some things in this article which made sense, so decided to translate and share with u all. Pls don't take this article to heart, coz' i know there are some bad things about F4 in it. Treat it as after-food relaxation article instead
