    **The F4 Effect**

    They are four, hot happening hunks. Meet the Taiwanese boy band that has yet to perform in Thailand but has already made the cover of most every magazine in the Kingdom.

    A war looms in Iraq. North Korea is making nuclear threats. The government’s war on drugs is producing bloodbaths upcountry.

    So what’s on the cover of most newspapers and magazines?

    A boy band, of course!

    F4, a Taiwanese boy band, is dominating most news-stands in Thailand. Glancing at a small news kiosk, at least five magazines of the tall, muscular and good-looking foursome, Jerry (Yan Cheng Xu), Ken (Chu Hsiao Ten), Vic (Chou Yu Ming) and Vanness (Wu Jian Hao), are spread out with flashy multicolour covers. The bigger news-stands or bookstores carry more than 20 of them.

    Even the latest publication of a critical political weekly magazine such as Matichon Sudsapda has F4 on its cover.

    The F4 frenzy in Thailand started when Thai TV Channel 3 brought to the screen the Taiwanese soap “Meteor Garden” in mid January. The series stars all four band members. The soap was originally aired on a Friday but F4 fever was so endemic that Channel 3 decided to suspend UMA 99’s Thai soap “Trab Fa Sin Dao Sao Kae” to make way for the Taiwanese soap on Thursday and Friday.

    “We had a similar experience when the hit Chinese series ‘Bao Boon Jin’ and ‘Krabi Rai Tiem Tan’ were on air,” says Somrak Narongwichai, Channel 3’s chief of production. “The popularity is rated by the number of commercials that come our way as well as the feedback we get from surfing the Internet. And now we have ‘Meteor Garden II’ ready to go on the air after the first soap ends.”

    “I was surprised to learn just how high are the ratings for ‘Meteor Garden’,” comments UMA 99 owner Yuvadee Thaihirun, whose soap opera was pushed aside to make room for F4.

    “The Thai soap opera market might be slightly down right now, but I’m sure if we keep producing quality works, it doesn’t matter where the series come from. And if ‘Meteor Garden’ is popular due to the boys, then I can only admire their production team for doing such a good job.”

    Before “Meteor Garden”, a few Korean and Japanese soaps aired on ITV and Channel 3 enjoyed great success. But since F4 hit the screen, no one seems to be talking about them anymore.

    Quite apart from “Meteor Garden I and II”, Vic’s solo soap “The Poor Prince” is scheduled to air on March 6, followed by more solo soaps from the other F4 members.

    Even though F4’s soap is a relatively recent hit, their music has been well known among Chinese language listeners since 2001. The band has released two albums and all except Jerry have come up with solo outings. Now some of their Thai fans are taking Mandarin lessons to be able to sing along and understand the lyrics of F4’s songs.

    In Satit Bangna Demonstration School’s Chinese class, F4’s song is a medium for the study. The professor teaches his students how to sing as well as how to read and write Chinese using their songs as the text.

    “I love ‘Meteor Garden’ because the story is fun and the boys are so cute. My classmates and I enjoy studying Chinese even more,” says Jitnutda Roongruang, a nine-year-old fourth grader.

    Jitnutda says she’s not the only one in her family who is addicted to “Meteor Garden” and crazy about F4. Her 64-year-old grandmother, her uncle, 43, her aunt, 42, and her mother, 39, also love them. Her six-year-old sister, her friends and older students are able to summarise every episode if you happen to miss one. And now F4 fans have adopted a body language of their own.

    To refer to F4 or “Meteor Garden”, they pull their index finger in a projectile curve like a falling meteor instead of stating the title.

    They also collect all kinds of F4 memorabilia such as stickers, pencil and pill boxes, gloves, umbrellas, towels and anything else on which the F4 logo has been printed.

    A partner in Asiaentertainment4u, a popular store that sells only genuine products of famous Asian celebrities, says F4 collectibles stay in his store for less than a day. This shop alone, located on the second floor of Lido Theatre in Siam Square, carries more than 50 F4 items such as paper bags and a mug that costs Bt300. And this doesn’t take into account other stores selling pirated goods.

    But what makes the phenomenon even more remarkable is that F4 has never performed in Thailand. Imagine the response if and when they do come here.

    “Some girls asked me to find F4 concert tickets early next month in Hong Kong for them. Some even asked me to set up a package tour for the concert,” says a partner in the store who asks not to named. “Some of them are accompanied by their mothers and the mothers seem even more keen on F4 than their daughters.”
