TRIBUTES FOR ELLIOTT
Tributes to the late Elliott Smith have begun to emerge following news of the singer-songwriter's tragic death earlier this week.
As reported yesterday, the acclaimed musician passed away on Tuesday (October 21) at the age of 34 in what the Los Angeles coroners office have deemed "apparent suicide".
A single knife wound was evident on Smith's body, which was discovered in his apartment yesterday afternoon. He was pronounced dead at the Los Angeles County Medical Center at around 1.20pm.
A statement issued by Smith's label Dreamworks reads: "We are deeply saddened by Elliott Smith's tragic death and send our condolences to our family and his friends.
"He was perhaps his generation's most gifted singer-songwriter. His enormous talent could change your life with a whisper. We will miss him."
Dreamworks executive Lenny Waronker added: "Elliott was the ultimate artist. When you heard his music you knew it was special, that there was something magical going on. He was two or three steps ahead of everyone.
"Being around his record making process was intimidating at times because his gift and his musical knowledge were so great - as a musician, a singer, a songwriter. Sadly, he was just scratching the surface.
He concluded: "We'll miss his music. And we'll miss him. He was a very tender and sweet soul."
Elsewhere, a number of musicians including The Eels and Moby have paid their own tributes to Smith.
The Eels, who lived close by to Smith in the Silver Lake district of LA, said: "Eels are very saddened to hear of their friend and neighbor Elliott Smith's death.
"He was a really sweet guy that wasn't equipped to deal with some of the cards that life dealt him."
"It's terribly sad," said Moby. "Elliott Smith was an amazing singer & songwriter and it's terribly sad that he's no longer here."
In a posting on fansite, sweetadeline.net, webmaster Charlie wrote: "I've been so lucky to experience my own love and other's love of Elliott and what his music has brought to us.
"It's never easy to put into words what someone means to you. Simply Elliott was such a lovely man. I'll miss him so much."
Smith (born Steven Paul Smith in Nebraska, 1969) released five albums throughout his career, most notably the acclaimed 'Either/Or' and 'XO' in the mid 1990s.
At the time of his death, he is said to have been working on a new LP, which was due to be completed before the end of the year.
