Cruz and Nap Gutierrez, Contributor Inquirer News Service TAIWANESE superstar Jerry Yan, popularly known as Dao Ming Si in the phenomenal hit TV series "Meteor Garden," will pay a courtesy call on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo when he arrives in Manila Thursday.
His much-awaited show with Vic Zhou and ABS-CBN stars at the Fort is on Nov. 29, but Yan is coming earlier as the latest star endorser of Bench. The President herself confirmed the courtesy call in a radio interview Wednesday morning. Yan is scheduled to meet with her at 2 p.m.
"(Yan) requested an appointment with the Philippine president," she said in Filipino in the radio interview. "It is a good chance to express our hospitality when known personalities visit Malacañang and greet the country through the President."
Yan, the most popular in the Taiwanese pop group F4, is expected on the 11:35 a.m. Philippine Airlines flight. On Friday, he will be in a press conference at Le Pavillon along Roxas Boulevard.
The Taiwanese celebrity will be in Manila for only two days, brought over by Ben Chan's Bench, which reportedly paid Yan 250,000 dollars or 14 million pesos for the endorsement.
Chan was quoted as saying, "We're quite happy with our decision to make him our latest endorser because the public response has just been enormous and overwhelming."
Yan is flying back to Taiwan on Friday night, said a source.
The Bench staff reportedly has been flooded with requests from children of Cabinet members -- among other fans -- to have their pictures taken with Yan.
His itinerary does not include any television appearance.
Shirts that say "Dao shall wear Bench" and "I Choose Bench" as well as posters and billboards of Yan wearing the shirts were released two weeks ago.
Yan will be staying at the Peninsula Manila in Makati City, where he is set to dine with members of the press Thursday night.
On Nov. 28, he will return to Manila with fellow Meteor Garden star and F4 member Vic Zhou. They will perform in a show called "Happy 50TV: The Concert" the next night at The Fort open field in Taguig.
To perform with them are Barbie Xu and her younger sister Dee Xu, who had also performed with F4's Vanness Wu and Ken Zhu at the Ultra last Sept. 13.
Yan is finishing his first solo album, which Sony Music Philippines will release early next year.
Yan is reportedly also set to do a movie for Star Cinema early next year.
