Palace work stops for 'chinovela' star Posted: 11:07 PM (Manila Time) | Nov. 06, 2003 By Juliet Labog-Javellana Inquirer News Service
Star-struck FORGET the impeachment.
No, forget all national crises .
Work stopped in Malacañang for nearly three hours Thursday as Cabinet officials and Palace employees and their children, plus orphans, cancer patients, journalists, and other star-struck fans turned up to give Jerry Yan, star of the popular chinovela "Meteor Garden" a welcome that was rather unprecedented.
No, try "frenzied.
" Presidential spokesperson Ignacio Bunye thought the reception in some ways rivaled the one laid out for United States President George W. Bush last Oct. 18. Similarly, it broke the record set by Thalia, phenomenal star of the Mexican telenovela "Marimar," who visited the Palace in 1997 during the term of President Fidel Ramos.
"This is such a welcome respite ... let's enjoy it," Speaker Jose de Venecia's wife Gina said as she waited with popular hairdresser Ricky Reyes for their turn with the Taiwanese actor.
Pandemonium broke loose in the hallowed Malacañang Ceremonial Hall when Yan, popularly known as Dao Ming Si in the TV series, emerged from his courtesy call with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in the music room to pose for snapshots with about 300 people.
Tall and good-looking, with his trademark tousled (and, not to forget, feng shui-ed) hair, Yan easily eclipsed Ms Macapagal, whose own staff seemed to forget she was around. They fought to shake hands and take photographs with the star.
Unable to contain the chaos, the Presidential Security Group whisked the President away from the hall, cutting short her participation in the scheduled photo session. She was seen frowning.
An hour before Yan's arrival, Palace protocol official Menchie Dulay had given strict, if entertaining, instructions for the welcomers: "Bawal kiligin. 'Wag tayong magpahalata. Isa lang po ang ating ambulansya. 'Wag tayo sabay-sabay himatayin (No swooning. Let us not be too obvious. We have only one ambulance. Let us not faint all at the same time).
" Dulay also reminded the crowd that if they asked for Yan's autograph, they would have to "show courtesy" to the President by also asking for hers.
Expectedly, the words fell on deaf ears. Ms Macapagal, Yan and his entourage never got to sit at the table prepared for them. At the sight of Yan, dressed in a black long-sleeved shirt and black slacks, a commotion broke out. Chanting "Dao Ming Si!" the crowd closed in, wielding digital cameras, cellphones with built-in cameras, and posters meant to be autographed.
Stunned and, according to a Palace official, scared by the mob, the actor followed Ms Macapagal out of the hall and into the adjacent state dining room, surrounded by security men.
Dulay admonished the crowd and threatened to cancel the photo session if they did not behave. After 10 minutes, First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo came out and also called for order.
The fans, earlier assigned to five groups for the photo ops, were crammed into only two groups, reducing the session to one hour flat. No matter. The brief encounter left the welcomers ecstatic.
Shy, kind, handsome
"Nalaglag ang panty ko (my panties fell off)!," 19-year-old Shalimar Inao exclaimed, unflustered. Her mother Edith, a Palace employee, could only smile.
Twin brothers Carlo and Paulo Flores, sons of a senior Malacañang reporter, had skipped classes for the opportunity to see their idol up close. The shy Carlo was speechless after shaking hands with Yan; Paulo was more outspoken.
"He was more shy than we were. His hand was cold," the boy said.
The first group that posed for pictures with Yan at the Ceremonial Hall were children of Cabinet members.
Earlier, nine orphans from Asilo and Caritas, five Philippine General Hospital cancer patients, and indigent children getting support from the First Gentleman were allowed to join Ms Macapagal and Yan during the courtesy call. They also had individual photos taken with the star.
Yan cuddled nine-year-old Marie Joy Guevarra, who wears artificial legs, during her turn. A grade four pupil at the Legarda Elementary School, Marie Joy had been nearly crushed in the melee. "Kinarga po (ako), masaya (He picked me up; it felt good)," she said.
"Mabait (kind)," was how Rossell Badajos, 17, one of the cancer patients, described the actor. Yan shook her hand and said, "Hi," Rossell told the Inquirer.
Michelle Daniel, 18, another cancer patient, said she was very happy to have met Yan, although her personal favorite was Mei Zhou, or Vanness Wu in the series.
Ricky Reyes said some of the children, beneficiaries of his charity foundation, vowed to not take a bath for days to preserve the memory of the encounter.
"I want to faint," Christine Borja, a Malacañang correspondence writer, gushed. The tall TV star had just held her hand.
"We want his autograph," cousins Bernadette Suva, 9, and Claire Suva, 8, said while waiting for the arrival of the Taiwanese TV star.
Journalists Aileen Intia of GMA Network radio station dzBB and Celerina del Mundo of Daily Manila Shimbun slipped into the Palace study room for a "scoop" photo opportunity with the visiting pop star, beating the entire Malacañang Press Corps to the draw.
The First Gentleman said Yan spoke very little English, and had brought an interpreter for the "casual talk" with Ms Macapagal.
"The President told him he was very popular here and he said, 'Thank you'," Arroyo recounted. "He was very happy.
" Yan was also "very handsome," Arroyo said. But he brushed off questions of the actor possibly helping in Ms Macapagal's campaign.
"Walang politika dyan (no politics there)," he stressed.
Assistant Secretary Abel de Leon of the Office of the President said the actor also held the First Couple's grandchild, Mikaela Gloria, who turned a year old yesterday.
Let alone the fans, Palace officials and workers were likewise in a show biz mood.
Journalists laughed when Press Secretary Milton Alingod playfully parted the curtain before the guest arrived, and showed his face to the waiting crowd.
When they got near the star, female Malacañang reporters giggled like schoolgirls.
Bunye was beside himself as well, taking pictures of Yan with his cell phone and saying, "For my secretary." He confessed, however, that he watched "Meteor Garden" whenever he could. He later canceled his usual press briefing.
Gina de Venecia wore denims and brought a photo for Yan to autograph.
"I like his dimples," she said unabashedly. Her son Philip is also a model for Bench, the biggest Philippine apparel company, which reportedly paid Yan 14 million pesos to visit the country.
Malacañang had a caterer serve snacks at the Ceremonial Hall, which was unusual -- and unnecessary, it turned out, as the food was hardly touched.
A radio reporter shook his head in disbelief. "Ang mga Pinoy talaga, artista lang ang katapat, nakakalimutan lahat (give Pinoys a star and they forget everything)," he said, and turned to Bunye. "Kaya mananalo talaga si FPJ (that's why FPJ will win)."
The President's spokesperson just smiled, giving no indication that the remark sank in. With Fe Zamora, INQ7.net
