I "think" anulment is originally for Catholic Christians who want to get married the second time. Catholic churches will not usually perform a wedding for someone who was married because by rule, once you're married - you're married for life - tll death do us part. Maybe that's why they have this option. I heard people get annulment because s/he was divorced but wants to get married in a catholic church.
and no - normal people don't just get married for fun. They are usually either drunk or don't think clearly. You have to go to court, have a lawyer for annulment - that is not fun. Some people decide to get married in Nevada because it is easy. It is not uncommon You don't have to prepare for wedding, no reception, no complicated ceremony, very little money involve - it's a good deal actually.
