Noel On The Blag! printed in Total Guitar in February 1996 typed by Neil Here's a pick of Noels top ten blags...
1) Cigarettes & Alcohol - 4th single Cigarettes And Alcohol basically is a Marc Bolan song. Closest to Get It On, but also with just a soupcon of the vocal melody if Telegraph Sam.
(2) Shakermaker - 2nd single Still early days for Oasis, but Noel's already right in there with the best of them. The New Seekers sued for royalties, claiming this came just a touch too close to their hit, I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing. Oasis' lawyers acquisced.
(3) Acquiesee - b-side to 6th single Some Might Say Vocal line neatly half-inched from Dusty Springfiled's I Only Wanna Be With You. Blag cleverly disguised with distorted guitars.
(4) Live Forever - 3rd single Slightly obscure one this, but the verse riff of Live Forever comes suprisingly close to the Smiths' Boy With The Thorn In His Side. Double irony: Noel used a Les Paul blagged off Johnny Marr to play it.
(5) Roll With It - 7th single Just listen to the intro; crashing D7, C7 and G chords (repeat this 3 times) - then what? Then the bleeding riff to The Who's So Sad About Us, that's what. The cheek of the lad...
(6) She's Electric - Morning Glory For a start, the mid-section lyrics were taken from a 1970 kid's TV program called Stop, Look and Listen. But the end is outrageous: the vocal harmonies from the close of With A Little Help From My Friends. Lifted exactly.
(7) Morning Glory - Morning Glory Song by Noel Gallagher, riff by REM (The One I Love). Cheers, bald American geezer.
(8) Whatever - 5th single Ironically, Noel was even sued by arch Beatles' copyists The Rutles for this Rolling Stones-esque "I'm freeee" song.
(9) Step Out - deleted Morniing Glory album track Removed from the Morning Glory album after Stevie Wonder insisted on a 10% slice of album royalties. You see, our Noel had come jus a bit too close to Stevie's Uptight, even to the extent of singing the very same "Alright" chorus over Mr Wonder's nicked tune.
(10) Hello - Morning Glory It's the opener from the second Oasis album, and Gary Glitter's lawyers start salivating. For here was the very same tune (and words) to the monstrously bequiffed one's Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again. Beyond any doubt.
