PRINCE OF HOKKIEN HIP-HOP SAYS: YEAH! ME TOO!
Jeff Huang
SOME things never change.
Twelve years ago, Jeff Huang wowed Taiwan with his Americanised rap and sleek breakdance moves, and today, he's still at it.
Except that the American-born singer has matured from teenybopper to respectable rapper, and moved on from pop group LA Boyz to Machi.
What remains unchanged is that Jeff, 32, is still the leader of the group and his members are still his cousins.
As a group, Machi debuted last year with Jeff and his cousins Steven Lin (also from LA Boyz), Edward Huang, Kenny Chou and Andrew Chou.
Jeff's buddy, Nicky Lee, also joins the group on the cover of its new album, Machi 2.
Together, they strive to make a lasting impact on the Mandopop scene, like LA Boyz did before it disbanded in 1996.
Jeff, who has since started his own music production company, said that fans still call him LA Boyz affectionately.
'People still sing LA Boyz songs and some even do covers of our songs,' he said in American-accented English.
He also claimed that 'many famous people Line is overdrawn in the entertainment business in Taiwan used to chase us around', but declined to give names.
'If you ask the groups who are doing hip-hop now if they know LA Boyz, they'll say yes,' he said with a satisfied grin.
'That's what I'd like with Machi too. Five or 10 years down the road, if (a singer) is asked 'Who are your influences?', he'd say, 'Machi'.'
In recent years, hip-hop and breakdancing have become hip again, what with the rise of dance-pop groups like Energy and K-One.
But Machi clearly stood out from the rest with its unique American-influenced rhythms and Hokkien rap, and its first album sold over 100,000 copies in Taiwan.
Jeff said he used to criticise groups that do cover versions of hip-hop songs from Korea (like Energy) for their lack of originality, but he has become more tolerant these days.
NO CONTROL
'I don't fault them anymore. Most artistes don't have complete say in what they do,' he conceded.
'I hope the record labels don't just hire guys who don't do any planning and just get the top Korean or Japanese tracks and say, 'Hey, let's use them in our next album'.'
But since Jeff himself calls the shots in Machi's albums, will he ever do sentimental ballads like Jeff Chang?
Chuckling, he said self-deprecatingly: 'I don't sing very well... If I do, I'd have an R&B album.'
But he doesn't rule out the possibility of fellow Machi members releasing ballads, especially Nicky, the strongest vocalist of the group.
When prodded by Jeff, Nicky even sang for me several verses of a song that he is still working on, entitled Jie Tuo (Set Free) and, boy, was I mesmerised!
Jeff said: 'With the two albums so far, you're listening to Jeff's music. You're not hearing Kenny or Nicky.'
