....Intimate photos exposed - Who touched the videotapes?
Last week, a Hong Kong magazine published intimate photos of Ken Chu & Li Bing Bing in a hotel lift & corridor. They stated that the photos were taken around May, June last year when they were filming City of Sky. It became a big issue in the entertainment business.
It makes people wonder why is the news exposed only recently when it happened a year ago, is it a way of publicity or was it true feelings? Another question was: who was the one who provided the videotapes from which the photos were screen captured from? If it's really from the hotels surveillance cameras, how did it land in the hands of the Hong Kong media?
A reporter tries to clear this doubt through his own investigation.
Who filmed the video tape? How do hotels security department work? We interviewed Mr Wang, a security department in charge of a five star hotel in Shanghai to find out.
The very first question to solve is whether the DV photos indeed came from the hotels internal surveillance cameras. Mr Wang explained, looking at the angles from the photos, it should be taken from the position where surveillance cameras are installed. Itกฆs quite impossible for outsiders to install another camera device due to hotels strict measures. And Beijingกฆs Wu Zhou Huang Guan Jia Ri hotels spokesperson did mentioned before that looking from the photos, it should be taken by their surveillance cameras.
From the reporters understanding, in most of the 5 star hotels, the security cameras solely belong to the security department. Usually, there will be surveillance cameras in every public guest areas to protect the security of their guests. For example, to search for missing items tat guests have lost in the hotel or even help in police investigations.
In most of the 5 star hotel lobby, there will be a 360 degrees rotation camera. Cameras are also installed at ATMs, counters, in lifts (to have a full view of what's happening in the lift) and at corridors leading to hotel rooms. Cameras are not permitted to be installed in guest rooms.
Who had access to the videotapes? Mr Wang said that very few people have access to the videotapes of the surveillance cameras. In the security room, the shots taken from the surveillance cameras will be displayed in screens of different sizes. Generally, the main lobby and other more complicated areas will have their own screen display while other areas will be displayed on 4,9 or 16 small screens. Usually there will be 2 people on duty, and will scan through all the screen displays every certain period of time. In most cases, the hotelกฆs security filming department can only be entered by employees of the security dept on duty on that particular day. They are in-charge of looking thru the hundred screens over and over repeatedly. After a box of video tape have been used up, they will immediately label and store it. Unless for special circumstances such as helping in police investigations, if not they will be left untouched until the storing period is over and it will be reused. As the videotape of Ken & LBB doesnกฆt fall in the category of special circumstances where it will be taken out to rewatch, therefore, only those on duty in the security control room on that day will know tat there are intimate scenes of Ken & LBB in the lift and hotel lobby video tapes.
Who will be able to bring out the video tapes? Then how did the videotapes leak out? According to Mr Wangs knowledge, 5 star hotels in China will keep their security videotapes for 3-6 months or even until 1 year. They will be stored in the security control room and arranged according to dates. They should be able to find out immediately if there are any tapes missing. Therefore, the videotape that was leaked out to the public could be a duplicate. However, Mr Wang explained that every camera will always be on record mode, even when a camera is faulty they have to report to the engineering dept b4 changing a new equipment, so the only possibility is that the tape was brought out and duplicated.
Mr Wang said that the security department is very strict. For their hotel, security employees have to record items that they bring in & out. But as a form of respect to their employees, they do not carry out search checks. So it's not difficult to bring out a videotape.
Who touched the videotape? The conclusion so far is: During May/ June last year, the security officers on duty at Beijingกฆs Wu Zhou Huang Guan Jia Qi hotel discovered Ken & LBB intimate behavior from the camera display screens, after finished recording, they brought the tape out of the hotel and duplicated a copy. Then brought the original tape back to the hotel. After a year, due to some reasons, they decided to release the videotapes to the Hong Kong media. However, this speculation is not confirmed by Beijings Wu Zhou Huang Guan Jia Qi hotel :-). When contacted, the hotels PR dept response was , We are still investigating, all I can say is, from the media reports and pictures, itกฆs indeed filmed by our hotel. But when was it taken, how did it leak out, we don't have any conclusion :-). We will definitely handle this incident strictly. It was found out that Wu Zhou Huang Guan Jia Qi hotel keep their videotapes for very short period of time, only for 7 days.
A reporter also found out that b4 the intimate photos were exposed, someone had contacted many HK & Taiwan media, and finally chose 2 of them to release. This deal was carried out very secretively, even employees from that magazine only know about it the day the magazine was published. It is said that the mystery person contacted the magazines top management directly, so not many know abt it.
Hong Kong paparazzi: It's not done by us
The reporter telephoned an experienced paparazzi, Mr Liu (not his real name) and his 1st sentence was, กงItกฆs not done by us. He said that the way HK paparazzi work has more or less became open. He expressed that paparazzi work in 2 methods. The 1st method is follow closely. It happens when they receive a tip off and they will follow the artiste for a long period of time. During that period, they'll pay attention to the artistes every move. They may spy on the artiste for 1 month or even longer, until they managed to film the photos that they need. The 2nd method happens when the paparazzi accidentally meet an artiste. They'll immediately run to the artiste, snap photos and ask some questions. The artistes are often caught off guard and may accidentally blurt out something, much to the delight of the paparazzi.
Mr Liu expressed that being paparazzi is becoming more difficult because the artistes have formed an alliance. In the past, we'll roughly know how many cars will HK artistes have and their car plates numbers, now the situation is reversed. The artistes know the model of cars and car plates tat belong to paparazzi. Because once a paparazzi identity is exposed, the artiste will note down their car number and inform his/her friends. So our job has lost its secrecy. Mr Liu added that the Ken & LBB videotape is definitely not filmed by the paparazzi. Although the paparazzi are using DV to film more often nowadays and then choose some photos from what they have filmed, but they usually held by hand, and not fix the camera at certain places.
According to Mr Lius knowledge, this Ken,LBB videotape incident is a deal. From his experience, the sum of $ of the deal wonกฆt be too high. Million of $ for an exclusive is not possible, 0,000 will be a good deal already.
Lawyer: Media reported the truth, not considered to be invasion of privacy A lawyer from Shanghai, Mr Wang Yi Chiu expressed his views abt the incident. For the media, if they reported the truth from wat they saw from the videotape and didnก't further elaborate and speculated wat happened in the room, then they will not need to hold any responsibility. For the hotel, as lift and corridor are considered partially public areas, what happened there could not be considered privacy (lawyers own point of view). However, China law doesn't have a concrete definition on privacy, so it's difficult to determine wat responsibility they have to bear. But for the hotels security tapes being released, they need to bear mismanagement responsibility.
