Finally, the BIG day was here. We arrived in Cebu early that morning, and were greeted by a smiling Jerry on tarpaulins hung on the road leading to the hotel. The guest of honor had arrived earlier than us, on a direct flight from Taipei the night before.
We proceeded to the grand lobby of the Waterfront Hotel, where lines had begun to form. It mostly consisted of the fans who had flown in from Manila and overseas. At the venue entrance, Bench hung tarpaulins of some previously unseen shots, including the full-length version of Jerry in a pink polo shirt and dark pants, seemingly asleep on a deck chair, barefoot. This picture is a must-see! There was an unguarded feel to it (making it appear as if they took the photo without him knowing it)
and I have to say, even his feet are sexy!
We saw Bench executives hard at work with the preparations. A booth was also set up for people who wanted to join at the last minute, all they needed to do was to buy 2 Bench tees in order to get a pass. We saw Bench owner Ben Chan overseeing the operations. He was a gracious host, very approachable to Jerrys fans, and he willingly took pictures with the people who requested for it. I could see that he also really appreciated the presence of the people from overseas, glad that they had traveled all this was for the event.
As it was getting closer to noon, we were a little worried as there didnt seem to be a lot of people lining up. Altho a Cebuano friend we had made told us that unlike the Manila fans who are willing to line up many hours before the event (which was going to start at 3pm), the Cebuanos were likely going to arrive just before the event start. Which really was the case
because by the time the event began, the place was packed.
They started to let people into the venue at around 130 pm. What greets you is a huge stage backdrop, a half-body picture of Jerry (in the Fat Free ad). The stage is T-shaped, the vertical portion looking like a ramp for modeling.
As usual, Keren Pascual (PR Manager of Bench) opened the show, asking the people to practice their cheers, going around to ask fans from the Philippines and abroad to sing Jerrys songs. Keren also mentioned that there was going to be a minifashion show, and that Jerry was going to sing three (3) songs. Finally, someone from Bench was announcing what was going to happen in the program. Apparently, as is their wont, up to the last minute, Fulong was holding off on what was going to happen until the last minute. We had heard earlier that day that there wasnt going to be a meet and greet type (eg: handshake, etc) of activity.
Finally, at around 3pm, the show started with an ABS-CBN clip, behind the scenes clips from the Bali shoot, and the Memory Pieces MV. It then proceeded to the fashion show, with male & female models coming out in Benchs latest collection. Like last year, the last part was models wearing the different designs of Jerry Yan tees.
The models then exited the stage, and the lights dimmed. The audience screamed, Jerry, Jerry. I finally saw the familiar figure coming from the right side of the stage, stopping right at the center of the T. He slowly bowed. The audience went wild.
The guest of honor was finally here
Jerry. And as usual, my heart bounced the way it does whenever I lay my eyes on him. For me, Jerry is like sunshine. Often, just before seeing him, I am sleep-deprived and very stressed with the excitement
but when I finally lay my eyes on him, I am filled with such a warm feeling, a happiness that is so hard to describe. I think this is the reason why a lot of us keep coming back. He is like a natural high.
I was fortunate to get a seat very close to the stage. Jerry is as shuai as ever. The crowd obviously felt the same way, because the screams were deafening. He was wearing a white Super 8 Bench tee, with green and gray sleeves, sort of like a baseball shirt. He paired this with Bench Overhauled jeans and his usual brown boots. I have to say, Jerrys lean :-) muscled frame carries off Bench clothes very well. I really like the way the Bench tees "hug" his chest. The clothes are casual, but on him, they look really special. His hair is a bit longish now, mostly brown layers. And my friend cant over the fact how fair he is, but still with that distinct, healthy glow.
I thought he looked a bit tentative as he entered the stage, and looked quite nervous. I crossed my fingers that he was going to at least walk the ramp, model-style, but then I heard the familiar opening strains of Gravity and he proceeded to sing his first song.
For the first time ever, Jerry sang live in the Philippines. And I dont know if this freaked him out a little (especially since its been a while since hes sang in public, as he has been focusing on his acting and endorsements of late). Because yes, he did miss a few of his lines
so some of us tried to help him out by singing with him, and screaming, Jia You to boost his confidence.
He then moved along the ramp, and we couldnt believe it when he paused in front of us. The Cebuana ladies behind me were near-tears, screaming. I think it was their first time to see him in person, and it appeared they couldnt believe how good-looking he was. He truly is mesmerizing.
He moved around the stage to face the different sections of the audience, and my friends & I confirmed that yes, even his back looks good. He then finished his first song, and we cheered. He said, Xiexie. I think he was also trying to say something else, but it appeared like he forgot what he wanted to say. We were surprised when he finally said (in English), Im really nervous.
Oh, Jerry. Thats one of the things that makes you so endearing. You come in such an elegant, hunk of a man package
:-) deep down inside, you can be such a little boy.
He then proceeded to sing his next song
and much to our surprise, he sang I Truly Love You from the Meteor Rain album. It must be a while since he sang this song in public, because again, he missed some of the lines
but it was ok, the audience still remembered the song, and sang it along with him. Very loudly. This song must truly be an audience favorite.
To encourage the audience to cheer, Jerry said, I cant hear you!
and people would sing even louder. When the song ended, Amy Perez (a tv host) and Raymond Shih (his interpreter) came out for some Q&As. I could barely hear the Q&A as the crowd was really loud, although I know he described the audience as very warm, the people in Cebu as attractive, and he made positive comments about the Bench apparel and their recent Bali shoot.
Jerry was still very charming and he smiled a lot, although he did seem more nervous than in his previous events. He admitted during the interview that he was a little anxious because its been a while since his last visit. We also theorized that maybe its also because his usual travel companion (Fanny) wasnt with him during this trip, and his interpreter is also new. (Shirley, his usual interpreter from the Philippines is now very pregnant and couldnt make it for the trip.) Perhaps the audience response also overwhelmed him
although you could see that he really appreciated their very enthusiastic reception.
Jerry also acknowledged the overseas fans, as he noted their blinking signboards and posters. His interpreter also asked him to say Mahal ko kayo (I love you, in Filipino)
which also made the local fans very happy.
The interview finally ended, and we were expecting Jerry to sing his third song. But much to our dismay, he then bowed to the audience, the lights dimmed and he exited the stage. That was it. End of program. It was exactly 4pm.
The lights in the venue went back on again, and it looked like the audience still couldnt believe that the program was over. Keren shouldnt have announced 3 songs, when it was only going to be 2 songs, as people were quite disappointed. Some theorized that it may be because Jerry was trying to catch the 5pm flight to Manila so he had to leave the hotel at 4pm.
