to understand pop art you should try to understand the central tenet of post-modernism and modernism. modernism is the response of artists toward to onslaught of modern technology, namely photography and mass production, as well as rapid sociopolitical change such as industrialisation. under this threat, artists strive to go beyond the boundaries of traditional aesthetics and natural compositions by trying to express what photographs cannot.
take cubism or expressionism, the former tries to 'draw' pictures with multi-dimensional movements through time and space, while the latter tries to 'express' emotions rather than depicting carbon copy of the reality.
post-modernism is literally after modernism, which brings experimentation to another level but still maintains the spirit of modernism. the warhol prints, for example, focuses on the pop culture and mass consummerism. 'pop art' per se, lifts icons from the pop culture off its context and depict them as art. idols such as marilyn monroe and cambell soups serve as the symbol for a consumerist society, of mass production, etc.
