The week before it hit #1 on the Hot 100, the song had only managed to reach a peak of #19. Although the song had hit #7 on the Hot 100 Airplay, it was pushed down to #19, as it has not recieved any points from downloads :-), as no advanced single was released for the song. The following week, West's album was released, and following his high profile performance at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards, chart analysts expected downloads of "Gold Digger" to be high, as the song had skyrocketed to #1 on various legal downloading sites like iTunes and Napster. It was expected to at least hit the Top 10 of this week's Hot 100 with the help of downloads.
As it turns out, the song has debuted at #1 on Hot Digital Tracks and Hot Digital Tracks with over 80,000 downoads, the most downloads ever in a week beating the record previously heled by Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl". Not surisingly, the help of the downloads helped propel the song to #1 ending the 14-week reign of Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together". Fans of Carey have expressed their unified dissapointment as they thought "Shake It Off" would replace "We Belong Together". "Gold Digger" preventing "Shake It Off" from the top prevented Carey from becoming the first woman to replace herself on the chart. Although "Shake It Off" has excellent airplay and good downloads, "Gold Digger" has excellent downloads and good airplay. As downloads are counted towards chart tabulation, West was able to beat Carey by a wide margin.
West has also defeated Carey in another aspect involving charts. Previously her single, "Heartbreaker had held the title of 5th highest jump to the top position with a jump of 16-1. "Gold Digger" now owns the title of 5th highest jump to the top with "Gold Digger"'s jump of 19-1 (pushing Carey's title into 6th place).
"Shake It Off" is the third single from Mariah Carey's fourteenth album, The Emancipation of Mimi. Released in 2005, the single is currently climbing the charts, and in its seventh week of release is at number two, making it Carey's twenty-seventh top-twenty single and twenty-fourth top-ten single.

On the song's 8th week, it was expected by chart analysts and even Billboard, that Carey would replace herself at #1 with "Shake It Off" taking the lead position from "We Belong Together". This predicted move would have made Carey the first female artist to replace herself. However, Carey would not be able to reap in this accomplishment, as "We Belong Together" lost the top spot not to "Shake It Off", but to Kanye West's "Gold Digger".
As West's airplay was below 100 million audience impressions, many thought he didn't stand a chance at challenging the top spot. However, in a record breaking fashion, "Gold Digger" received over 80,000 downloads, giving him enough steam to propell the song from #19 to #1. Billboard has gotten many comments crying foul as many have alleged shady dealing, as the song was not released as an advanced single (causing people who wanted to download "Gold Digger" to wait until last week). Billboard has not commented on the situation.
This is not to say that "Shake It Off" should be ruled out from the top spot :-). West's downloads are based on unprecedent factors: the single was not released as an advanced single meaning that people who wanted to download the song had to wait until the album was released to download the song. It is felt that the downloads of "Gold Digger" were thus highly condensed, and that next week they may drop off giving "Shake It Off" possible room to hit the top position.
