Young cancer victim serves as inspiration for bags

Girls and teens alike can "Carry a Cause" with the new holiday "Handbag of Hope" line.

Designed by 18-year-old teen fashion entrepreneur Ali Spizman, the bags now available at more than 3,000 Claire’s and Icing by Clare’s stores worldwide.

Spizman credited their design to the mission of courageous "wish kid" Hope Stout, who passed away from a rare form of cancer.

She said she created the line to carry on Stout’s voice by raising funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which will receive at least 10 percent of the proceeds from the sale of each bag.

The funds will help grant wishes for children with life-threatening medical condition, a mission that’s shared on each bag’s tag that tells Stout’s story. The bags also feature her artwork.

So far, the project has garnered tremendous interest and support from the celebrity community. Pop star diva Mariah Carey arrived at the Handbag of Hope launch and foundation’s 25th anniversary in New York to accept an award recognizing her lifetime of support to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Actor and comedian Keenen Ivory Wayan’s four daughters, Jolie, Daphne, Nala and Bella, don’t go anywhere without their Handbags of Hope, according to their mother, Daphne.

The handbag has received support from celebrity fashion stars as well. Debbie Brooks, a high end celebrity handbag designer, contacted Spizman about designing one of her signature handbags with to support the cause. Celebrity fashion designer Indashio also supports the line.

Spizman, who also is a national teen volunteer ambassador for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, just released her second book, "The Power of a Wish: A Celebration of Hope, Love and Gratitude" (Active Parenting Publishing, $14.95), in honor of the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s 25th Anniversary.

In the book, the award-winning author shares the powerful impact wishes have on recipients, families and people involved in fulfilling them. For each book sold, $1 will be donated to the foundation to enhance program services nationwide.
