(Magazine) Marie Claire March 2007 Issue.
Pretty/Beautiful prince.
SE7EN one of Koreas entertainment talent is Rains high school junior. Since is debut in 2003, his popularity has been rising rapidly, not losing to his senior. SE7EN is confident and believing that being young is one of his greatest assets. His natural and unpretentious image in addition to his recent drama works of Goong S has captured many hearts.
Marie Claire (M.C): I remembered the first time when I interviewed you, it was when your song Come back to me attracted a lot of attention. I remembered asking you what do you expect of your music career in the future. Your answer was to enter the U.S industry. At that time, I still thought your were being too unrealistic. I didnt expect that you are actually working towards the goal. How did you evolve to what you are now from the once a upon newcomer who isnt afraid of anything?
SE7EN: Neither did I expect myself to enter U.S (laughs). That time I was actually joking. But during this period, I had a lot of ideas about music, and there is a lot of things for me to learn about. Only until now, I understand a little bit more about music. During this period of time, friends who listened to my songs should be able to feel that Ive grown up. I think that it is quite obvious that my music is different from the past. SE7EN is no longer just a singer, but also a passionate musician. To me, involving in the music scene is not all about learning music, the cultural and excitement of different places Ive experienced is also a form of learning. Especially to interact with different and mass medias, it is a very good experience for me. They are factors to my growth. ~
M.C: Not long ago, I heard that the YG Family Show held in America was very successful. You had very close interaction with the audiences..
SE7EN: Not only the Korean fans, even the Black American girls sang with the music, the atmosphere really made me very touched! I always think that America is the originating country of R&B, how do we let them accept our music, but now, the response theyve given us really made me exhilarated!
M.C: To people who are involve in pop music, there is ultimate attractiveness in the U.S stage. But, to be successful there is not an easy task.
SE7EN: Of course, the main factor is music. But an unavoidable factor is that different skin colour is an obstacle. But from another point of view, from the fresh ideas weve brought over, they have to agree with our talent.
M.C: Currently, you already had many activities in Japan and China, so accordingly, you should have different way of performing in different countries right?
SE7EN: Ive always maintained my own style of performing, in addition to that, I try to reflect the culture of the country in my music. The most important issue is still the language barrier, regardless of singing or acting, language is something to be over come first. Ive already released Japanese album in Japan, and currently learning Japanese. Of course, its impossible to learn all the languages, my goal is to at least be able to use the countrys language to sing a few songs. Im thinking that this is the only way to close up different cultures.
M.C: Many 23-year-old boys havent started their lives with careers, although theres no need to follow what others are doing, but for the sake of music youve sacrificed much fun and enjoyment. Isnt it a pity? Are you confident that you will not regret in future?
SE7EN: I have absolute confidence! Since I was young, I loved music. Music has a much more attractiveness as compared to playing with friends. Its the same now. But this doesnt mean my school work isnt good! (haha!!!) Im currently studying in university, its tough but I will still try to make use of free time to study. If you ask me will I regret, I can tell you that I will not. I can only feel never before happiness, because Im doing what I want to do!
M.C: But I heard that you have a special relationship with your boss Yang Hyun Suk. As you gain more experience, the relationship between both of you will become more important isnt it? Do you mind talking about your future plans?
SE7EN: We are not the normal relationship between the boss and artists. Put it in this way, he is not a boss who is only capable of controlling the singers from the back, neither am I a puppet who will be controlled. I think this can explain everything.
M.C: Is there anything which you are afraid of? Eg: Lonely, failure, fame, etc..?
SE7EN: The truth is that, I havent thought about this question before. People who are afraid of failure and the losing of fame, eventually are because they are worried about failing in their career. I, to be truthful, dont know what is failure, neither do I want to know what is it. I only know that I have to put in my heart to work, but there will definitely be some failure, to people who are hardworking, failing is something to learn from. So, regardless of success or failure, it wouldnt have negative impact on me. The same applies for my advancing to the U.S music industry. If you are afraid of failure in the beginning, how do you go on? Of course I will hope to be successful, but even if Im not, its still a type of training.
M.C: Regarding acting, what plans or aspiration do you have?
SE7EN: I think its the same for music and acting. Although its a different kind of performance and different stage, the goal is the same. My music is to make everyone happy, and my acting is to share my woe and happiness.
M.C: Whats your reason for participating in Goong S?
SE7EN: Long time ago, Ive always thought of taking part in acting, its just that up till now Ive been busy with my music career. This is my first drama, I hope that the character suits me. Furthermore, if I give up this chance, I may not have this kind of chance again. Actually the thing which attracted me is the script. [jhyun-se7en: there is a sentence which I dont really understand here, so I didnt translate.]
M.C: You are only 23 years old, you have a very bright future. Especially youve got such good results in U.S. Can you tell us about your future goals?
SE7EN: Singing, acting, and entering the U.S market have been my ambition. If these dreams can be fulfilled, I think I can live a very happy life! And of course if I have greater ambition, I have to be put in more hard work. But if my current dreams are fulfilled, I think I dont have any more requests. (laughs!)
M.C: Do you think you have any weakness or anything which you need to improve on?
SE7EN: Umm, its very hard to say. Music and mathematics are different, there is no fixed formulas, and no definite answer. I will show all my feelings. Isnt the SE7EN now the perfect answer for this? Hope everyone will take note of my plans and progress.
M.C: Do you think there is anyone who has misunderstanding about you?
SE7EN: I dont think so. The SE7EN you all see is the real me.
