Part : 2
Q:Coffee Prince No. 1 Shop is not only popular in Korea, but even in Taiwan, China and Japan where it is already gaining a wide popularity even before it is broadcast. CP is able to breakthrough cultural barriers and differences in custom and well received, what is the reason for this?
A: Mmmm
., first of all, I think, since we are all Asians, even if our cultures are different, the part of the drama which the audience perceives are the similarities, although western foreigners may have difficulties to completely understand it, Asians should largely feel the same about it.
Q:Gaining fame as a Hallyu star through this drama in Asia, what do you think was the attraction of this character Han Kyeul ?
A: Yes. Actually, I did not expect that this drama would be so popular in Japan, Taiwan, China. The wide acceptance given to this drama is one thing I have to be thankful for. Its not only one persons effort, but the whole casts charm and the production teams collaboration not only made the audience like the drama itself, but also like the HK character
Q: What was your impression of CP when you first received the script ?
A: Compared to the people around me, I myself was not that passionate about it. It is because I felt that idol dramas have limitations, with the same clichéd characters and plot, honestly speaking I was not comfortable about many things.
Q: So, for you, the fervent response to the drama was not expected?
A: I did not think it would have such high ratings, and receive the love of so many people. The mutual understanding between the director and the actors during the filming of the drama, gradually came together, since there are people who turn on their TV specially to watch this show, we should give our friends a good show
(laughs). Its largely like that. I have the confidence that I not will be part of a work that will make me feel embarrassed. But in fact, CP was popular and it achieved its commercial goals
. Moreover, it was also popular overseas, really did not expect that.
Q:For you, among your works, is CP the best work so far ?
A: You can say that. Because it exceeded my expectations gaining the love of so many. An actor like me owes his existence to the audience. CP in my mind has become my most profound work because many people loved the drama. Aside from that the filming process was fun. Filming a drama is always interesting, that point in itself makes me feel very satisfied.
Q: Having regard to the limitations of Idol dramas, and you were not positive about accepting CP, what was the turning point to accept the role of HK?
A: Actually its about 60-40. I was about 40% OK about it, and the people around me 60%. After I received the script, there were two weeks time of extreme worries. The role of HK is a role that usually appears in Idol dramas, with the clichéd story of Cinderella meeting her prince on a white horse and living happily thereafter. But how the character and story is handled, this point is also very important. I deliberately watched Director Lees previous works and I was moved after watching them. From the props to the background music, all were thoughtfully conceived and meticulously arranged, someone who can create a beautiful drama like this will not fall into the usual clichéd conventions and should be able to inject a fresh approach to the Idol drama mold. I therefore made my decision to accept it. During filming, each day brings a new feeling. Later, without realizing it, I really became Han Kyeul , extremely happily carrying on with the filming of the drama.
Q: Your collaboration with the cast is really great, the actors who worked with you say you are a warm-hearted person, please tell us about this.
A: Is that true ? Im really happy. Because I am a human being, every human being is warm hearted isnt it ? What is inconceivable is that although I did not intentionally act like this, among all of us, we all value one another. To the point of losing objectivity. To this day it is still like this. For example, if they do something bad like stealing things, I would want to help and protect them, our friendship has developed to this degree. Like how they say I am a warm hearted person, I also find them to be warm hearted persons. Its not only me thats warm hearted, but everyone is also warm hearted. Like gears that need to click together to produce movement, it is because of this common bond, that we are able to compliment each other
(smiles)
Q: Actually, is the person in the drama HK or Gong Yoo
(Laughs)
A: Indeed, it is because we have some similarities so that people did not find it artificial. But after all, a TV drama is only a TV drama. It is the essence of the drama, which made it easy for the character to attract the audience. I also feel that I am very similar to the character, but despite the similarities, there are a lot of differences.
Q: In what aspects are you similar?
A: Both HK and I have difficulty in dealing with others. (Smiles). Although this is not always the case but, from time to time, personality-wise , not really the type who can get along with others.
Q: Are you similar in the way you treat women ?
Q: GY has now been dubbed as the greatest prince of romance, are you romantic in reality ?
A: Being bestowed that title is due to the drama. Although people often say I am very gentle, but I am not as great as HK. (Laughs).
Q: Your leading lady YEH said : Working with GY, I not only found him very good-looking, but he is also a warm hearted person. I am thankful to him for looking after me during the filming of CP. If not for him, I would probably be only be able to act out only one half of Eun Chans character. What kind of person is YEH?
A: Speaking in a favourable sense, she is an ambitious girl and full of energy. There are many actors who cannot match together, that is why I was a little bit worried in the beginning. But that was all unfounded. She can be a good actor in the future.
Q: The looks Han Kyeul and Eun Chan give each other, and the little things they do to each other are all very natural giving the feeling that the love between them really exists.
A: To date, I have never had to force myself to do something in my acting in a drama or movie. Perhaps it was in my subconscious, but when I was acting the role of HK not once did I have to make myself think you have to do it this way or have that sort of attitude. During the filming period, even when I am with my family or friends, I unconsciously become Han Kyeul-ish even in the smallest details. My interpretation of Han Kyeul comes through the TV screen and is truly felt by the audience. I like this process which naturally forms the character.
(ประโยคข้างล่างนี่อยากให้เป็นจริงจังเล้ยยยยยยยยยย 5555555555) Because she and I are in love, we have to look at each other completely lovingly without any artificiality. With the directors help, ingeniously balancing each actors characters perspective, enables everybody to have a common understanding and approach.
Q: The director and production teams effort are necessary, but the creation of the character in the end rests with the actor. Excluding the part which is already pre-determined (by the script), in your performance in CP, the part you made a special effort is to give a natural feeling?
A: Did not really make a special effort. We already have what is dictated by the script, when the director and actors get together, the result produced by the synergy of these people exceeded our expectations. This was very interesting, and you may also say, is very lucky.
