When Gong Yoo was losing his passion in acting, Coffee Prince Shop No.1 came by
Q : To Gong Yoo, 2007 was a fabulous year because of Coffee Prince Shop No. 1. Prior to this project, his acting career seemed to have remained at low ebb.
A : Yes, thats true. Most of the actors must have experienced that before. It has been 6 years since I started my career in the showbiz but acting no longer trigger any passion in me, to the extent that I have totally lost interest in it. I also began to wonder whether I should carry on in this profession. There were just too many factors which led to that situation..... And during that period, Coffee Prince Shop No. 1" came by.
Q : In that situation, were you more careful when selecting the next project?
A : Yes. At that time, Im losing the confidence that an actor should processed. So I have to exercise extra care in my choice. Frankly speaking, I did not have very good impression of Coffee Prince after reading the script summary. I am biased against modern drama, and I hope to participate in a drama with more solid content. Light-hearted drama does not attract me that much. I have participated in many dramas that focus on younger generation. Before my enlistment, I hope to take up a role in a higher quality production, like those artistic films. However, the production of this drama is even better than my expectation and has gained high viewersrating. I am very satisfied with this project and its success should be credited to the PD.
Q : Is it true that before selecting the casts for this drama, the writer already had you in mind when writing the script for Coffee Prince?
A : I think so. I only heard about it either in the mid or end of shooting. So the shooting of the drama was not done with this consideration from the start. However, Im very happy and glad to know that the writer had me in mind when writing the script, taking into account of my image and performance from my previous projects. I have not met the writer before but she is able to create this extra-ordinary role and won the favours of many viewers. It is due to her careful measurements in all areas.
Q : Do you think you and Han Kyul are alike when you first read the script?
A : Frankly speaking, the role of Han Kyul was not so attractive in the initial script summary because he seemed to be a typical rich guy from the 3rd generation of a wealthy family. And I had a in-depth discussion with the PD and scriptwriter in modelling the role of Han Kyul. The production started only after we reached the consensus of this role. We agreed not to stereotype the role of Han Kyul to be a typical wealthy guy.
Q : What had been done to make this role look more real?
A : Firstly, we dislike the idea of a rich guy being chauffeured around in big imported car. So this part was changed. However, this is still a drama so we try to be realistic as much as we can. For example, Han Kyuls house and cars are not the luxurious type but they are classic. The PD has also looked into small details of Han Kyuls belongings etc.
Q : Did you make any suggestion?
A : I suggested to use Volkswagen Golf which Im currently driving in. However, the PD suggested BMW Mini instead. Anyway, ideas of the plot were mainly from PD and the crews. The majority of my recommendations were on the acting portions and Han Kyuls relationship with his mum and grandma. For example, when Han Kyul interacted with his mum, sometimes they are like friends and at times lovers like. How Han Kyul behaved when hes with his fierce but cute grandma. All these are suggested by me. But when come to actual shooting, it was not as easy as what I initially thought. However, the PD was receptive towards my ideas.
Q : I heard that you were trying to reduce your weight two months before the actual shooting.
A : Let me clarify. My weight losing was not to prepare for those topless scenes (laugh). I didnt know that there will be so many topless scenes at the very beginning.
Although Han Kyul is not a cleanliness freak, I would think he is the sensitive and slender type. So too much fats in the tummy, doesnt look that nice. Moreover, being a trendy person, Han Kyul should look good and fashionable in those clothes he wear, a slender figure would suit him more. I went for body building when shooting forOne Fine Day in 2006. But Han Kyul is not so suitable to have too much muscles so I spent about 2 months to reduce my weight. Although I have only lost 2kg, my body looks a lot thinner because Im not the plump type.
Q : Although your weight losing was not to prepare for the topless scenes, it seems that PD wanted you to do more of those(Laugh)
A : Maybe thats scriptwriters wish (Laugh). From the beginning, I have told the PD, unless it is necessary, Im ok to go topless. If not, please do not arrange to have those scenes. However, the scriptwrite told me Many viewers have left messages in the forum that they want to see more of your topless scenes, so I just laughed and got away (laugh).
Q : What is the reason for taking up this project?
A : My confidence in the PD is the key to my decision-making. Just like an actor who is judged by his acting skills, the PD is also judged by the overall performance of the whole project. When I was invited to this project, I decided to take a look at the last project of the PD. It was so interesting that I finished the 8 episodes drama at one go. At that time, my prejudice of the modern drama was gone. At that time, I thought, if it is PD Lee, maybe I can entrust myself to her. Her working principle is no matter how meaningless a thing may be, if you are sincere in doing it, you can definitely touch a persons heart. Besides that, being able to produce a simple and yet a heart-felt project is another strong characteristic of PD Lee. This is the first time I work with a female PD, the level of sensitivity and thoughtfulness I experienced can never be compared to a male PD.
