Director is receptive to suggestions from new comers, the filming locations were cosy and lively.
Q : I heard that when you always hold the script when you are at the filming location. Are you the type who will follow the script closely to play your role?
A : No, I am not. I prefer to include some phrases that I always use or add in some new ideas during the actual role play. I will not do a complete mock up performance for the sake of next days filming. That is because I value the inspiration to act on the actual day than preparation beforehand. The reason why I always hold the script at the filming location is because that makes me feel relieve, just like a baby who feel at ease when he is holding on to his favourite towel. I am not sure why I feel that way, just like a baby (laugh). This has become my habit since I joined the entertainment industry.
Q : What is charm of each of the three Coffee Princes?
A : I like the three of them. What they have in common is, they are hardworking and intelligent. Lets begin with Lee Eon, a model turned actor. In some way he is very similar to Min Yeop (laugh). However, he is neither blur nor impulsive like Min Yeop. He is someone who ponders a lot and is very independent. I think Jae Wook and the character in the drama are alike. Although he does not talk that much most of the time, and seems to be an introvert, but when he is with someone he trusts, he can be surprisingly chatty (laugh). If he drinks, he will be a totally different person. His likes and dislikes are very obvious. In front of someone he likes, Jae Wook is the type who is prepared to share everything. But he will not even look at the person whom he dislike (laugh). Although Dong Wook is a new comer, his acting is commendable. He is always well prepared before filming. He has studied his role in this drama carefully to bring out the special character of Ha Rim.
Q : The filming site must be very lively with so many young actors around?
A : The atmosphere is great! I always tell the new comers that they are very lucky to be in a filming site with such good atmosphere. Other than the leading casts, the director always seek opinions from the new comers to carry out the filming. In the usual circumstances, the new comers will follow the instructions from the director to play their roles. However, this does not seem to be the case over here.
Q : What is your deepest impression working with the CP crews?
A : We had a great time when filming the excursion scene, it was just like going on a trip with friends. However, I was injured when shooting at the river. There was a scene where I fell into the river when I was pushed from the rock. My knee hit the stones in the water and was sent to a hospital for treatment. That was why, when everyone were having fun in the river, I was not in that scene. Although the injury was not serious, if you look at the subsequent scenes carefully, you will notice that I was limping slightly.
Q : Which part of the filming is physically exhausting?
A : When filming for drama, the schedule is so tight that we hardly had the time to sleep. In the later stage of filming, almost all the shooting started in the evening and ended in the following morning. Comparing this drama to Biscuit Teacher and Star Candy, this is slightly more relaxing. At that time, I hit my record for continuous filming for two and half days. On the third day, my brain could not function at all. Although I attempt to memorise the script many times, I just could not remember the longer lines. I was so angry at myself that I exploded in front of the camera which I have never done so before. I had NG for 10 to 20 times and I felt very sorry towards the crews. That was the time I discovered, two days of continuous filming is my limit. The camera man also commented that my lips looked unnatural on the third day. Although the filming for Coffee Prince has not gone to that extent, it is still very tough as Korean Drama production team sets very high standards at the filming locations.
Q : In the drama, Han Kyul cooked for Eun Chan, sang to her and supported her for further studies. How does Gong Yoo treat the person he likes in reality?
A : Drama is still a drama (laugh). Comparing me to Han Kyul, I think he is so much better. I give people the impression that I am the type who will go all the way out to take care of a girl but I am not as great and as attentive as Han Kyul. How I treat my girlfriend will depend on her personality. However, the scene where Han Kyul sang over the phone, I have done that before.
Q : Han Kyul who seemed to be perfect is actually scared of ghost. How about Gong Yoo?
A : I get frightened with ghosts and scary stuffs as well. When I was shooting a scene where Han Kyul was scared of ghosts, I pretended to calm in front of others, but I was actually very scared (laugh). The director also said Your expressions looked so real, you are not acting, arent you? I think the director spotted that. I also dare not take roller coasters or similar rides. Other than that, I cannot watch horror movies alone, such as Japanese MovieJuon, which is really terrifying. Do I have any supernatural experience before? Even if I have, I will want to say no because that is really scary (laugh).
Q : Han Kyul is not good in drinking. What about Gong Yoo?
A : Han Kyul can only drink red wine but I am opposite. I get drunk easily with red wine. If I am moody, the more I cannot drink because I get knocked out even more easily. In normal circumstances , I will sleep on the spot when I am drunk. During the filming of Coffee Prince, the crews and I went for a drink frequently but I am always the first to knock out (laugh). If I drink too fast, I will feel the impact immediately. My capacity is even much lower now, that is probably due to age is catching up (laugh). In the past, when I feel tipsy, I will still struggle to stay to right to the end. I feel bad having to trouble my friends now. Hence, whenever I feel something is not right, I will leave quietly and sleep in my managers car. My manager is aware of my habit and if he discovers that I am missing, he knows it is time to send me home (laugh).
Q : Taking the lead role and being the eldest among the younger actors, do you feel the pressure as a leader?
A : Even though I am the oldest, Lee Eon is only two years younger than me. Ah
I am not saying I am also very young (laugh). All of us are in our 20s, I am not so bothered that I am older than them. Besides that, I also do not like to be restrained by Senior/Junior relationship. Although they addressed me as Hyung (ie elder brother), I always treat them as my friend (laugh).
[To be continued]
In part 4, Gong Yoo will touch on how Coffee Prince Shop No.1 affected him, his feeling before enlistment and his words for all his fans.
