 Closing Movie <I'm Happy> Press Conference: HB smilingly shared how he destresses
[Sohu Korea report] PIFF closing movie <I'm Happy> held a press conference and screening on the 9th. PD, HB and LBY were in attendance. In the movie HB acted as a psychiatric patient, seeing him in person was a very pleasant surprise.
Although the movie was aptly named <I'm Happy>, the character HB was playing endured a nervous breakdown after his family spiralled down in debts, his mom went insane and his brother committed suicide. He also became a psych patient himself. LBY was a nurse at the facility, she was living under a lot of pressure as well as the caretaker of her dad with a terminal disease. This is a depressing movie, but has a title <I'm Happy>. We asked Mr PD, where is the happiness?
PD Yoon: When I first read the novel, I was also wondering how can this madman possibly find happiness? I was very depressed after I read it. I felt the hopelessness felt by some ppl in life. In this movie I want to get across the message that the more you want to attain happiness, the result may just be a depressing opposite.
There were a lot of dark and depressing scenes in the movie, but even so, the main characters didn't give up. They are indeed the one who are happy compared to those who give up easily. But there has to be sadness in order for happiness to prosper. If our world is loomed by happiness alone, then happiness does not exist since there is no relativity.
Reporter: Please may I ask Mr HB and Miss LBY, if you experience the hardships your characters went through in real life, what would you do?
HB: When I was feeling down, I would chat with my seniors, we'll hang out, eat and drink. I'm not a person that is easily fazed by pressure. If I come across some difficulties in life, some people may think it's stress, others may just regard it as frustration or a lacking. I will just regard is as a lacking, and won't transpire it into stress. This way, it can be easier handled.
LBY: I'm like HB, I won't go through the same intense stress my character went through in reality. If there are problems with work or life, I'll go to bed and sleep, after I wake up, everything's fine.
Reporter: This movie was shot in a special location (psych ward). Is there a particular reason for the choice? What are the difficulties you have experienced during filming?
PD: We were choosing btn psych ward or a retirement facility. We want to shift the limelight to these neglected corners of our society. These spaces are isolated, and the people living inside were going through a myriad of problems.
LBY: I have always thought my acting is lacking, when I got the script, I was hesitative and a bit scared, 'Can I do this well?' There are a lot of difficulties during filming.
HB: I went through a lot of problems filming this movie, because I have never acted in a similar role before, and I'm not a mental patient *grins*. I studied a lot of books and movies on the subject and the day before shooting begins, I made a visit to a mental facility.
I met with a few of the patients, we talked in a room and I was very overwhelmed, and I released it bit by bit in the movie. I have tried my very best in this movie, but the audience is the critic, if they criticize my acting, I can understand. Afterall this is my first time tackling such a character.
Reporter: What is your impression of attending PIFF for the very first time as an actor?
LBY: The filming was very grueling, HB, me and all the crew members had a hard time. This is the first time I've done a movie as difficult in 6 wks. We have put in a lot of sweat and tears, and we made it this far to PIFF. I'm very happy.
HB: It's a great honor to be in the closing movie for PIFF.
reporter: What is the role of PIFF in regard to the Korean movie industry?
PD: As we all know, Korean movie industry is going through a difficult time lately. Production teams, PDs, artists can all felt its impact, and PIFF went on in this looming concern. This is a very tough period, but actually this can be form of opportunity. It is the time for new movies, new genre to bloom and ripen. Whether it's the movie industry or movie festival, it's the same. Me and my fellow PD friends believe there will be new movies out, Korean movie industry is still full of promise.
Reporter: What did you learn from your characters?
HB: This movie filmed during March to May, it was very difficult. If Mr PD asked me to do this again, I will definitely refuse *grins*. I only went back to Seoul once during that period, I took a break for one single day, and relaxed at the beach, I felt really happy. During much more difficult times, I would ask myself, why did I choose acting as my profession? I can not find a definitive reason for why I want to be an actor. Maybe that's what a choice is and what it chooses you. It's like both sides of the coin, without the demand fr the press and the audience, I wont be able to stay in this position as an actor. When I was filming this movie, I had deeper thoughts on some questions in life like, why I want to be an actor? How can I be happy?
LBY: In the movie there was a scene when dad passes on but HB decided to leave town to fish. That was the first time I felt that I can reach that intensity of emotions (wailing hysterically in the movie). When I make my decision on my next role, I will consider what can aid in improving my acting, in bringing out my potentials.
PD: In the beginning, I thought, 'Isn't HB supposed to be a rich prince?' And I've heard he has never been through any tough luck in life. The clothes he has to wear in the movie is also sth he will NEVER wear in real life till the day he dies. ( HB lol ) Later on, I found out LBY was also a Miss Korea, also has never tasted hardship in life. The budget was miniscule, the schedule was very tight. I trapped them in a small rural village and discussed with them about the movie through the nights. HB initially had a CF shooting overseas, because of this movie, he postponed it.
