Khun's interview for Sudsabda Magazine
ไม่รู้อ่านกันยังจาก soompi อ่ะ แต่เป็นเวอร์ชั่น inter ^^
The interview was taken place in July 2007.
"....I was born in the US. I moved back to Thailand when I was 2 years old. My old house was at Charansanitwong 37 (a Bangkok district). I studied at "Tepkanchana School" from pre-elementary to Grade 4. I remembered that I went to school late every day. When I, my brother and my sister entered school, we did not see anybody because all students were already in class. We were late because we woke up late. Our father gave up with us in getting us from our beds. He then let our teachers to punish us instead if we were late at school but it never worked out for us anyway. "
"When I was a child, I was chubby. I remember that every year Colgate toothpaste company came to our school and set up a competition for students who have good tooth health. I won the prize every year and my reward was a tube of toothpaste. When I was at Grade 4, my family relocated to Putthamonthon (Bangkok suburb). So we had to change to a new school. My school life there was fun and my new friends were different because they were not city children. We got ourselves tan as we played in a broad daylight a lot. "
Q: How were you raised by your parents? "If I wanted a new toy and told my father that all of my friends had that toy already and I wanted one too. My father would ask me back if it was necessary to have it like others. I remember when I was at toy sections in the department store, I picked up a toy and showed to my father. He would ask me to put it back right away and said it was expensive without even looking at the price. My father didn't buy toys for me because he knew me very well that I got bored of things easily after a couple of days. If I failed to get thing that I wanted, I was upset with my father and would not talk to him all day."
"My father normally took me to shooting at "the name of shooting venue" near the Emerald Buddha temple. He told me if I was good at shooting, he would buy me a toy gun. He bought the toy gun for me from cheaper toy store though. For my father, he normally asked for something as an exchange. He wanted to teach me that I need to take action on my own when I want something. " "My father wanted me to take an extra studying class. I was never free on weekends as I had to go to extra school. When I complained and asked my father why I had to study on the weekend. He called me to talk and asked which periods I wanted to be free, on the weekend or on the school break. If it was the weekend, I could only stay at home or played badminton. But if i chose to be free on the school break, he told me that I could go anywhere I wanted to, to the north, south of the country or even overseas. So when I got better options from my father, I then waited to be free on school break instead."
Q: What about your mother? "My mother always agrees with my father but she is more kind. She bought me things when I asked. My grandmother was very strict. When I was 8 years old, I visited my grandma in America. She gave me, my bro and sis notebooks and asked us to write down how to behave and taught good manners. She even taught us how to speak correctly not in the slang ways. She corrected us if we spoke words wrong. If any of us did something wrong, we were marked in our notebooks. Before we returned Thailand, she would check who got the less bad marks and gave candy as a reward. Each of us always carried our own books and tried to mark others' books if we heard anyone speak incorrectly."
Q: Were you a naughty boy when you were little? "Yes, I was a naughty boy. I was with a bad boy group and did not pay much attention in class. I liked YUKI cards, Tamagochi, Digimon anime. I talked all the time during class and my teacher had to move me to sit next to a girl. I got a better grade working with girl students."
"I used to take 500 baht (approx. 12 USD) from my father to buy a Tamagochi game with my brother. My father said this was not right and he could take it away from me. I felt sad and guilty but my father forgave me. He told me when I really want something, I had to show him why I deserve it."
"When I was a kid, I loved my toy gun very much. One day my father went out to pick up my sis. I told my bro that we need to protect the house. I walked around carrying my gun to guard the house. My father came back, I was afraid of being scolded for taking out the toy gun. I left it and ran away to upstair. My sister grabbed the gun and fired at my brother face. Fortunately my brother covered his face in time. My father was very angry and threw the gun away over the house fence. He told me that he had warned me of this danger but I was not careful. I was very mad at my sister at the time." (He actually made an angry face to the interviewer).
Q: I heard you studied in New Zealand? "I have a relative there. He told my family about a good Catholic school which was built for over 150 years. It is a disciplinary school. Students have to jog and swim every morning. My mom went to survey the school and sent my brother first. Then she sent me to study there later." "About a year and a half, my brother moved to study in the US. I was so lonely there being by myself. I called home crying and asking my mom to go back. My mom consoled me. I felt better and was able to live there by finding activities like drawing, listening to music, playing the piano."
Q: How were your friends there? "There were some racists there. Asian people like fried rice. When we walked past them, they called us "Fried Rice" It sound like they were joking but with the looking down. Sometimes they pointed at our faces and called "You're Asian." Sometimes they talked with an accent to mock us. It was quite offensive."
"My life in the boarding school was ok. Most of my friends liked me because I was quiet and not arrogant. I respected my seniors which is a very important manner there." "I had to studied English course first. When I was able to communicate I went for math, science, and Japanese. I used to ask to take a history class but my teacher did not allow me to as the language is more complicated. I finished most courses within a year while most people take 2 years. I was not a study-hard type of person. I think I have a good brain. I memorize things fast. I could have got a better grade if I was not playful too much."
Q: Did you have other activities besides studying? "I was a badminton player for my dormitory team. I was good at badminton as my father used to take me to the badminton court. I had to practice with a coach for 2 hours a day every weekend. Most activities I did were introduced and forced by my father when I was a kid like playing the piano or drawing. I was not happy doing all those back then. But I got to use those skills when I studied in New Zealand. I even got an athlete tag for my gym cloth from wining a badminton match. I was the only student in my year who got to wear that shirt."
"After studying English in New Zealand for a year and a half, I became more fluent. My aunt in America called my mom that there was a room available. My mom then sent me to America to stay with my brother. I moved there but after a short time, my brother moved out from the house to stay in the dorm when he finished his highschool. I ended up being alone again."
