When I asked managers (including department chief, team chief, road manager at the entertainment management companies) i met during this reporting, "who is the star you would like to work with?", they unanimously chose Bae Yongjoon. When I asked them back, "Is it because he is a Korean Current star who is doing very well lately and as he is making a 'big money'?", they all shook their heads as if they agreed beforehands.
"They say that Mr. BYJ presented import car and expensive cars and rented homes in Kangnam for 2 managers and a coordinator who worked with him for a long time. It is not that we wanted to work with him because he gave maangers expensive presents. Among the star entertainers, there is no one who think of and treat their managers as precious as Mr. BYJ would do. The first reason we would like to work with him is because he treat his managers as individual person."
It is Mr. Hwang at a large management company who is in his 7th year of life of manager.
The industry of entertainment management is growing bigger in size outwardly indebted to Korean Current hot wind, etc. However, the managers we met on the sites confessed, "we envy BYJ's managers," and "we are no more than a disposable paper cup of the stars."
The main task of management industry is said that managers would help and manage the stars' activities. It is not an exaggeration to say that this industry begins in the relationship between stars and managers. At present, the maangement industry in Korea place much emphasis on actors(film-TV) and singers. Current reporting was made centering around the actors' management companies.
'BYJ's gifts' is like legend
The dictionary meaning of a manager is 'person who controls, person who runs, people who takes care of' etc. In other words, it talks about people who train, control, & influences others and who woks on the tasks which are necessary for those. Although managers in the entertainment industry mean people who overall plan and manage the activities of entertainers, actual 'reality' is far apart from such 'theory'. Following is a talk by Mr. Hwang who continued to say.
"When I first began to learn business in this field, seniors emphasized time after time that 'do not give affectionate feeling to 'people who makes up with powder(jargon indicating entertainers in the management business)'. You will get slapped on back of your head.' Although I did not know what that means at first, as I experienced many entertainers for a long time, I naturally got to know that meaning. Most of entertainers just 'predend to treat us well' because efforts by managers would influence their management of popularity and income, and whenever there appears company who offers even a little bit better condition or there is opportunity to act, they coldly turn around. In cases of the newly debuted who just began to gain popularity, I saw in many occasions where they would get out of the company they belong to finding excuse to cancel the contract even if there remains the contracted period. I also suffered from several of such cases."
When BYJ cancelled exclusive contract with his agency Hanshin Corporation in April of the last year, many management companies went out to compete to invite him. Although they suggested huge sums of contract fee and even attached provisory clause that they would accept 100 % of conditions he would request, all of them were declined. BYJ, refusing all sorts of temptations, he made a contract with (Inc.) BOF by Bae Seongwoong & Yang Geunhwan who had been working as his managers suffering and being happy together with him over 4 eyars.
The (Inc.)BOF is a new planning company launched by Mr. Bae & Mr. Yang with 100 million won capital. It has invited Mr. Lee Donghoon who majored in film, broadcasting & marketing in California State College in USA as its CEO. The more surprising thing is the fact that BYJ signed the exclusive contract without getting separate contracting fee. BYJ also agreed that 4 board directors including Mr. Yang Geunhwan would equally divide the share right of the company.
Mr. Yang revealed that "the only condition Hyeong(older brother)(he called BYJ as Hyeong) requested was to manage the domestic and overseas fans systematically and to maintain the atmosphere like family like now." Regarding the 'BYJ's gifts' which is well known in the management industry, he told as following.
"Hyeong did not want us to eat pork when he ate beef. He regarded managers he worked together with as precious beings and always talked hightly of them that they were people whom he cannot do wihout for his activities. About 2 years ago, Mr. Bae Seongwoon got import car and I and coordinator, as we do not favor import cars, got expensive domestic cars as gifts. And whenever the family (calling the family in the agency) rents home or there occur events when they needed money, he has helped without saying any. Hyeong frequently said, "if your are poor in eating and living, wouldn't you think of other things when you work with me?" Even now, he takes care of minor employees first and enjoys exercising with them."
BYJ who created 'Yon-sama' hot wind in Japan last year is known as an entertainer who is full of humane beauty.
