RAIN is already making waves in the U.S. Last year he appeared in SPEED RACER and come November he will star in James McTeigue’s bloody martial arts actioner NINJA ASSASSIN. In development for two years, AWAKEN THE DRAGON is a noir-style remake of Bruce Lee’s 1973 film. Back in 2007, Sutter stated that it will be a contemporized drama about a lone FBI agent who pursues a rogue Shaolin monk into the bloody world of underground martial arts fight clubs. To fill the role of the Shaolin monk, Sutter had been looking to discover a fight star while an established American actor would play the FBI agent. If Rain does get the role, he will have gone from playing a Japanese martial arts expert to a Chinese martial arts expert despite the fact that he is Korean and doesn’t practice martial arts outside of his film preparation. Before NINJA ASSASSIN, Rain had no screen fighting experience and little or no martial arts training. However, Rain did train extensively for his ninja role for six months prior to the start of production and is reportedly doing much of his own fighting without wires. Whether or not this will satisfy Bruce Lee fans is another thing. I’m leery about the idea of a non-martial artist following in Bruce Lee’s shoes but I’m not going to completely dismiss Rain yet. I haven’t seen NINJA ASSASSIN and the first teaser trailer shows too little of the film. I’m not prepared to pre-judge his performance or his general ability to carry a credible lead in a martial arts film. I am always skeptical of pop stars who try to be martial arts stars but Rain has proven to be a quick study based on behind-the-scenes footage. As for the remake, it’s marketing hype. Without Bruce Lee, any remake of his films is just another film with the exception of Jet Li’s FIST OF LEGEND, director Gordon Chan’s quality remake of Lee’s 1972 classic FIST OF FURY. The difference here is that FIST OF FURY actually had a solid story that resonated with audiences in Hong Kong and abroad. ENTER THE DRAGON has nothing worth salvaging without Lee. It would be like remaking POLICE STORY without Jackie Chan in his prime. Just based on the two-year-old description of Sutter’s remake, AWAKEN THE DRAGON already appears to be substantially different. It was hardcore "R," pretty much bloody action packed fighting, slicing and goring, headbashing, flying stars, swords, chain and dagger. (Well, there was a story, too, pretty much an homage to the genre's stereoplots.) Everyone speculating about Rain's performance--let me tell you as one who was there, he did not disappoint in any department. I totally can see why WB would be excited to cast him in another MA film. Debating whether it's better to have a MA expert who's not an actor or train an actor up is sorta moot, isn't it? We want the choreography to be exciting, we want the action to be believable, we want someone to root for, we want be caught up in a wild fantasy, we want to be entertained out of our skulls. I love Jet Li and many of these older guys, but I want to see a new Asian star step up to carry the torch. You should too if you want to see more mainstream MA films. People making judgments on the basis of rumors or a trailer? NA is not aimed at pop fans, it is too hard core. The audience coming out of the sneak preview for NA were STOKED. Posted on Wednesday, August 5th, 2009 by Devindra Hardawar Update: There’s currently some debate as to whether Rain is up for the Bruce Lee role, or the villain role of the film. While it would honestly make more sense to have Rain take up Lee’s mantle instead of an “established American actor”, I can’t say for certain since the source article isn’t entirely clear. We will keep you posted. Korean pop-star Rain seems to be well on his way to becoming an action film icon. After his supporting role in Speed Racer, he stayed within the Wachowski family to star in Ninja Assassin (which early buzz seems to indicate that he kicked a sufficient amount of ass). Now, according to our friends over at Latino Review, he could be taking on a role made famous by Bruce Lee himself: Rain may have snagged the starring role in a modern noir remake of Enter the Dragon, dubbed Awaken the Dragon. The project is the brainchild of Kurt Sutter, formerly an executive producer and writer on The Shield. The film will be Sutter’s feature film directorial debut, and will follow an FBI agent in pursuit of a rogue Shaolin monk into the seedy world of martial arts fight clubs. According to Latino Review, WB may have settled on Rain for the role of the monk. Sutter is apparently aiming to make the film “more Raging Bull than Crouching Tiger in its viciousness.” (Basically, not all that different than the original.) I’m not too concerned with the prospect of remaking Enter the Dragon. It was among the better of many tournament martial arts films we received throughout the 70s and 80s—something I would primarily attribute to Lee’s persona more so than anything truly original in the film. Its basic structure  has basically been remade many times already. The real wild card here is Rain, who doesn’t get cred as a real martial artist since he came from pop star origins (though this Ninja Assassin behind the scenes footage seems pretty believable to me). While this would have been a perfect opportunity to give Donnie Yen some Hollywood love (seriously, check out Ip Man), I don’t think Rain is a terrible choice either. Judging from what I’ve heard about Ninja Assassin, his martial arts prowess seems legitimate, and I think the guy has a solid on-screen presence. My big worry with casting pop stars in martial arts films is that we’d get another Storm Riders, but I don’t think we need to worry about that with this project. Screen Rant reported on this “sort of” remake almost two years ago, and much of the details remain the same: Awaken The Dragon will be about a lone FBI agent who pursues a rogue Shaolin monk to get him to participate in the world of underground fight clubs. Warner Bros. is hoping for the FBI agent to be played by an already established American actor, and the monk to be played by a “fight star.” And Latino Review’s scoop says that fight star will be Rain.   The Shield writer/producer Kurt Sutter is writing the script for, and making his directorial debut with, Awaken the Dragon. The aim is to make the 21st century update of the Bruce Lee classic have a Noir feel. The story of the original was that of a martial artist who is drafted by a law enforcement agency to enter into a fighting tournament and take down a drug-smuggling operation run by the guy in charge of the tournament. Here’s what Sutter had to say about his contemporized take on Enter the Dragon: “I’m a huge noir fan, and this plot lends itself to the film I want to make I wanted to set it in these underground fight clubs where the action is really raw and expose the brutality of Shaolin Kung fu. This will be more ‘Raging Bull’ than ‘Crouching Tiger’ in its viciousness.” Rain is starring in the upcoming Ninja Assassin, an English-language action film from the director of V For Vendetta, James McTeigue and Matrix producers The Wachowski Bros. After starring in a few Korean films and TV shows (including Park Chan-wook’s charmingly peculiar I’m A Cyborg, But That’s Okay), Rain got his first English language role in Speed Racer. And, after seeing the trailer for Ninja Assassin, I can say Rain looks absolutely kick ass in martial arts role, eradicating any doubts people may have had about a pop star becoming a great action star. I know I’d certainly be up for Rain getting the lead role in Awaken the Dragon. At the start of the year, fellow Screen Rant writer Rob Keyes posted a video showing the behind-the-scenes stuntwork of Ninja Assassin by the infamous 87Eleven stunt team. Rob pointed out something interesting: If Rain does indeed get the Awaken The Dragon gig (which it seems likely he will), and with the amount of movies 87Eleven have worked (300, Watchmen, Bourne trilogy, on and on), could we see the same stunt team work on Awaken The Dragon? I’d actually be surprised if WB didn’t already have them in mind for it. I don’t usually like remakes because of one simple thing: most of them tend to lack much originality and are just trying to capitalize on the popularity/success of the original to make money. Having said that, if they can make Awaken The Dragon different enough that it doesn’t just come off as a rip-off, then I’m all for it. Awaken The Dragon certainly sounds interesting - will it have more martial arts-style versions of the fight scenes from Fight Club, perhaps? 87Eleven did the stunts for that, too. On one hand, the mind reels at the thought of somebody trying to replace Bruce Lee in a remake of the legendary martial arts flick, Enter the Dragon. But on the other hand, I'm not about to turn down the chance to stare at Korean pop star Rain for two hours -- I mean, have you seen the abs on this guy? So lustful thoughts aside, it's about time I got to the news, isn't it? Latino Review is reporting that their sources have confirmed that the singer/actor is the front-runner to star in an update of the 1973 classic. The original film was the first kung fu flick to be produced by a major studio, and starred Lee as a Shaolin martial artist sent undercover to a hidden island in a fight to the death. The film is infamous for being Lee's last before his untimely death at the age of 33, but was also a passion project for Lee who wanted to celebrate Chinese culture and make a kick-ass action flick. I think we can all agree that he succeeded. It was about two years ago that Warner Independent first announced they were mounting a "noir" remake of the film with The Shield's executive producer, Kurt Sutter, making his directorial debut. According to earlier reports, Sutter's Awaken the Dragon would focus on an FBI agent who is hot on the trail of a "rogue Shaolin monk" in the world of underground martial arts fight clubs. According to Latino's sources, Rain would be playing the monk, but there was no word on who WB might be considering as the FBI agent. Granted, I'm sure Rain has had plenty of fight training for his role in James McTeigue's Ninja Assassin, and judging by what we've seen so far, the guy has been getting the full 'Matrix treatment' when it comes to his training. According to Latino Review, it was only after WB execs got a look at what Rain could do that they put him at the top of the list for their Dragon remake. Even though the film is more of a 're-imagining' than a remake, there is still one very big difference between Rain and Bruce Lee: Lee was a martial arts master and an actor, whereas Rain is a pop star with a little bit of fight training -- not exactly the same thing, is it? ความคิดเห็นที่ 10   จากข่าวเรื่องการทาบทาม Rain ในหนังแอคชั่นเรื่องใหม่ ซึ่งว่ากันว่า จะรีเมคมาจากหนังบรูซลีที่เคยโด่งดังเมื่อในอดีต   ปรากฎว่า เป็นข่าวดังมาก พูดถึงกันในสารพัดเว็บหนัง  แน่นอนว่า ทำให้เกิดกระแสทั้งบวกทั้งลบ พวกคนที่ได้ดูเรื่อง Ninja Assassin มาแล้ว หรือได้เห็นเบื้องหลังนินจามาก่อน ก้โอเคกะข่าวนี้   แต่พวกแอนตี้การเอาพวกป๊อบสตาร์มาเล่นบทบู๊ ก็ไม่ชอบ โวยวายกันใหญ่ แล้วรวมถึงพวกที่เคยคลั่งไคล้บรูซลีด้วย ยิ่งพวกที่ไม่รู้จัก Rain หรือรู้แต่ว่า เป็นนักร้อง เป็นปีอบไอด้อล  ก็เป็นเรื่องธรรมดา ที่จะคัดค้าน หรือโจมตี และสิ่งที่มักยกกันขึ้นมาคือ Rain ไม่ใช่นักสู้ในชีวิตจริง ไม่ใช่ martial artist ของจริง ไม่เคยมีพื้นฐานการต่อสู้แบบบรูซลี หรือคนอื่นๆ ประเด็นนี้ น่าเถียงด้วย คนเล่นหนังแอคชั่น ไม่เห็นจำเป็นต้องเป็นนักมวยในชีวิตจริงถึงจะเล่นได้นี่หว่า คนเล่นเป็นตำรวจ เป็นหมอ เป็นมือปืน ต้องเป็นอะไรอย่างนั้นในชีวิตจริงด้วยเหรอ  ไม่ต้องหรอกมั้ง ตราบใดที่คุณเป็นดาราคุณภาพที่สามารถสวมบทบาทได้อย่างสมจริงและทำให้คนดูเชื่อได้ว่าคุณเป็นตัวละครตัวนั้นจริงๆ  แล้วก็เป็นหน้าที่เป็นความรับผิดชอบที่จะฝึกฝนพื้นฐานให้สามารถแสดงได้จริงๆ แล้วปัจจุบัน การถ่ายทำมันก็มีตัวช่วยเยอะแยะ ไม่ต้องเล่นจริง บู๊จริง ขาหักจริง หน้าแหกจริง อย่างเมื่อหลายสิบปีก่อน จาก คห.ที่ 5 ที่คุงจินแปะ คนนี้ ไปเม้นท์ไว้ในท่ามกลางเสียงโวยวาย 555 เลยอยากแปลให้คนที่ขี้เกียจตาลาย (ใช้ชื่อแบบนี้ แปลว่า เป็นแฟนองค์บากด้วยนะเนี่ย) tonyjaa @ kungfucinema said : ผมได้ดูเรื่อง Ninja Assassin ในการฉายรอบพรีวิวในงาน Comic-Con เมื่อเดือนที่แล้ว พวกคุณล่ะ มีใครได้ดูบ้างมั้ย หนังเรื่องนี้ เป็นหนังเรต R แบบฮาร์ดคอร์เลยล่ะ เป็นหนังบู๊เลือดสาดที่เต็มไปด้วยการต่อสู้ฟาดฟันกันกระจาย ทั้งขว้างอาวุธตัดคอ ดาวกระจาย โซ่ ดาบสั้น ดาบยาว (แต่ก็มีเนื้อเรื่องด้วยนา ค่อนข้างจะเป็นแบบที่เคารพรูปแบบของหนังประเภทนี้เลยทีเดียว) สำหรับใครที่คาดเดาในเรื่องการแสดงของ Rain  ขอบอกในฐานะคนที่ได้ไปดูมาแล้วว่า Rain ไม่ได้ทำให้ผิดหวังเลยซักนิด ผมเข้าใจดีเลยว่า ทำไม WB ถึงอยากได้คนคนนี้มาเล่นในหนังบู๊แอคชั่นเรื่องต่อไปอีก จากที่ถกเถียงกันเรื่องที่ว่า จะดีกว่ามั้ยถ้าจะเอาคนที่เชี่ยวชาญในด้านศิลปะการต่อสู้อย่างแท้จริงมาเล่นในหนังแอคชั่นแทนที่จะเป็นดารา หรือเอาดารามาฝึกให้บู๊ เรื่องนี้คงเถียงกันได้อีกยาวล่ะ  พวกเราต้องการเห็นท่าทางการต่อสู้ที่น่าตื่นเต้น บทบู๊ที่ดูสมจริง เราต้องการคนที่มีพื้นฐานทางนี้ เราต้องการจะเห็นหนังในแบบเถื่อนๆ  อยากจะมันแบบเข้ากระดูกกันเลย ผมน่ะชอบเจ็ทลีนะ แล้วก็บรรดานักแสดงรุ่นเก่าอีกหลายคนด้วย แต่ผมก็อยากจะเห็นนักแสดงเอเซียรุ่นใหม่ที่จะก้าวขึ้นมารับบทแนวนี้ด้วย พวกคุณก็น่าจะคิดแบบเดียวกันถ้าอยากจะเห็นหนังแนว martial arts มากขึ้นในหนังกระแสหลัก ผู้คนมักตัดสินจากข่าวลือหรือแค่ตัวอย่างหนัง จะบอกให้ว่า NA น่ะ ไม่ใช่หนังที่ทำขึ้นมาเพื่อแฟนชาวป๊อบเลยนะ มันฮาร์ดคอร์มากๆ  คนดูที่เดินออกมาจากโรงในรอบดูก่อนใคร ต่างก็รู้สึกร้อนระอุกันทีเดียว  ไปดูกันให้เห็นกับตา แล้วค่อยตัดสิน (ในความสามารถของ Rain) แต่โดยส่วนตัวแล้ว ผมล่ะแทบจะอดใจรอไม่ไหวที่จะดูเรื่องนี้อีกซักครั้ง!! It's been long since I had a glance on this movie, but I guess it's finally being released after so long. The actions and graphics have long been finished with and since there haven’t been any complaints on additional work to my graphic team, there won't be much differences made. Frankly I don't like violent movies. Not to mention horror films also. But I like action and martial arts and since it stars Rain, being a Korean myself, I took a look at it. Of course I haven't seen everything since not everything is handed to us, but to get to the bottom of the line, Rain was excellent. Within the Warner Bros. I work for, people think that Rain has a higher potential and value as an action actor than Jet Li (He's not more talented than Jet Li in martial arts, but the majority think that he looks better on screen and has higher potential than any Chinese actors. His comments within the Hollywood action executives is extremely positive). Of course, this movie alone will not grant him such a high status. It's because this movie is too much for the mania class, which most people agree with. The film is being made to be a noir interpretation of the original story, which starred Bruce Lee as a martial arts expert who traveled into the underbelly of a Shaolin monk’s dangerous underground fight club.  In the new version, Lee’s character would be an actual FBI agent. Rain would play the Shaolin monk, Han, played by Kien Shih in ENTER THE DRAGON. Again, I really had fun with the film. James McTeigue: Oh, thanks very much. I’m glad you like it. It’s nice to talk to people who get what that film’s about and they get into it and it’s a genre film but hopefully it’ll be an Asian film and a lot of people who normally wouldn’t go and see those films will go and see it. So I’d be happy if that happened. Q: A lot of the reasons I like the film probably couldn’t be typically advertised on daytime television and I’m just hoping that they can find a way to advertise that– the great action. It’s really a great action film, so– James McTeigue: Yeah, you know, I think partially that’ll be, like, the red ban trailers that’ll come along. They’re obviously only be certain sites that can shop it. I think where there’s a will there’s a way and obviously that first trailer you saw is– it’s the friendly version of the film. They can’t obviously show what actually happened in the film but yeah, I think they’ll get it out there in a smart way and Warner Brothers are really behind it, so hopefully everything will be cohesive.
