From Kang Ji Hwan thread ( KJH interview that is related to HGD and Yuri)
Breaking new ground by challenging action scenes
Q. Why did you choose to star in HGD? A. This was the case with 7 Grade too, but I found the script for HDG to be interesting. Since it was a fusion sageuk and not a traditional sageuk, I thought I’d be able to show a different aspect of myself and it made me think that this was “my project”, so I decided to take it.
Q. In a previous interview you mentioned you weren’t very athletic, so did you have a hard time mastering the actions in HGD? A. I attended action school for two whole months and learned things like martial arts and wire action. By the time I got home in the evening I was pooped. Initially I got so tired I wanted to quit, but before I knew it, my body had gotten used to it and it became more fun. Eventually, I was training enjoying the status of an advanced learner (laughs). They’re all good memories now.
Q. How does it feel to have challenged action scenes? A. You might say it feels like breaking new ground. I think I was able to show a new aspect. Any actor would like to show different acting, different image, right? Back then, there were times when it got tough, but whether it was coincidental or I got lucky, thanks to HGD, the action scenes in RC and 7 Grade went smoothly.
Q. We heard that you didn’t use a stunt man even in dangerous scenes like the explosion scenes. Didn’t you get hurt? Also, what do you think is the best action scene in HGD? A. Even though I trained at action school before the filming started, there were times the set wasn’t prepared properly and I got hurt. But I never got hurt seriously. The best action scene…Wire action? Only the people who’s done it can appreciate it, but it’s extremely hard on you…
Q. We understand that a lot of scenes in HGD was shot deep in the mountains. A. We stayed up there for about 6 months. The first time I came down in six months, all the women looked beautiful (laughs).
Q. What was the hardest thing while filming in the mountain? A. Being in the mountain, having to endure the cold was the hardest thing. It was cold even with 2 -3 layers of clothes. And then, there’s the isolation. It felt like being in the military. When I got a day off and went back to Seoul, I remember going to see a lot of people.
Q. In spite of filming outdoors, we heard that you were able to maintain such beautiful skin that people called you “kwan (light/glow) ji hwan”. Do you have a secret? A. I have naturally beautiful skin. Just kidding (laughs). I don’t have any secrets, but…I eat well and wash thoroughly. Anyway, I wash my face well and use lotions and creams (laughs).
Q. The fashion in HGD got a lot of attention. Did you participate in developing the image too? A. Naturally, it’s the stylist’s job to create the outward appearance, but I was really into it too, so I gave my ideas and even bought some props myself. I got the sunglasses and the little wooden drum used by HGD. The outfits and hair style were decided after frequent discussions, but the reactions have been good so I’m pretty satisfied.
A fan of co-star Sung Yuri since her idol days Q. Is it true that you’ve been a fan of Finkl and recommended Sung Yuri for the role of Ho Yi Nok? A. Ha ha ha. All men like Finkl. There were a lot of candidates, but I was secretly rooting for Yuri. She was quite pleased when I told her about this later on. We got along well from the beginning.
Q. What kind of an actress is Sung Yuri? Do you have a memorable episode? A. Hong Gil Dong was an unconventional role for me too, but it must have been really tough for Yuri, who had a strong image of a pure and innocent girl up that point, to play the tomboy role of Ho Yi Nok. One time, there was a scene where she had to eat 3 times, but each time she ate with gusto. She really gave her best effort in the action scenes too and it was heartwarming to watch her. Oh! And she gave me a cute puppy, Nogi, for my birthday present. I used to play with Nogi a lot on days I wasn’t working, but I got so busy I couldn’t take care of him myself, so I had to entrust him to my parents’ care.
Q. Which love scene between Gil Dong and Yi Nok do you like the best? A. It’s the scene where Yi Nok falls asleep waiting for Gil Dong, and Gil Dong kisses her while she’s sleeping. I remember Yuri kept on laughing resulting in a few NGs.
Q. Was it hard to film the under the water kiss scene? A. We shot that scene in the valley in the mountain so the water was really cold. It was fall when we first started filming, but the river was really cold…It wasn’t a real kiss scene, so I was quite disappointed. Ha ha ha.
Q. What kind of an actor was Jang Geun Suk? Did you feel the tension on the set like you did in the drama? A. He’s a very reliable guy. Once the shooting starts, he’s got a great ability to concentrate. He’s already successful now, but he’s an actor that can grow even more in the future. There’s no tension whatsoever; to the contrary, we became close while working on this project and even now we meet for drinks once in a while.
Q. Which ad lib do you personally like the best in HGD? A. It’s the scene where I’m beating on the little wooden drum chanting a prayer. Everyone was asking me what the chant was, and when I told them it was “Sharp Blade Hong Gil Dong is a Hit” chanted backwards, they laughed and said I was a “genius.”
