A new look for Kim Min-jung in Hero October 18th, 2009 // by javabeans
Actress Kim Min-jung (New Heart), who came onboard Hero after Han Ji-min dropped out, has a new look for the dram:-) meant to draw out her professional side as a female cop. On the one hand, I think Kim is a talented actress who looks cute with the short style, but on the other, I don’t know why dramas think that an unflattering short haircut is the best way to make a woman look “serious.” It didn’t really work for Song Hye-gyo in The World They Live In, who adopted a similarly blunt bowl cut in the name of “professionalism.”
(Face it, kdrama watchers are a critical bunch — who like characters to be pretty or comically ugly, but not really anywhere in between — and paired opposite an uber-popular actor often remarked upon for his pretty features (Lee Junki, that is), I don’t think the look does her any favors.)
Kim’s management company explained that the new image reflects how diligently she is putting herself into her “cute, passionate detective” role, “and is working very hard to deliver bright and healthy fun through her character of Hero’s Joo Jae-in.”
Kim Min-jung’s last role was in the ill-fated baseball drama Strike Love, playing a sweet, innocent character that was well-received by fans of the original manhwa, who felt she captured the essence of that pure character. No doubt this role will be a turn in the other direction. Hero premieres November 11 on MBC.
